NOTE: Employees in these positions will be scheduled for not more than twenty-four (24) hours per week . An employee in this class, under the general supervision of the Transit Supervisor, operates all transit vehicles in a safe and reliable manner for the Muskegon Area Transit System. A Bus Operator answers customer questions, reports problems to supervisory personnel, instructs new employees in the proper operation of vehicles and departmental procedures, drives transit vehicles for special charter operations, and performs related duties as required. Required Experience and Training 1. Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test.2. Have a minimum of five (5) years driving experience.3. Have a valid driver's license.4. Have an excellent driving record which satisfies the following characteristics:a. Demonstrates a pattern of safe and lawful motor vehicle operation.b. Less than five (5) points on driving record.c. No record of impaired driving or driving under the influence offenses.d. No more than one accident which resulted in a violation in the past five (5) years. Additional Requirements :As a condition of continued employment, employees in this class are required to possess and maintain a Michigan Commercial Driver's License with BP endorsements within forty-five (45) days after hire and continually thereafter, and to comply with federally-mandated drug and alcohol testing programs. Physical Activities Employees in this class must be in good physical condition such to allow for light physical work activity involving bending, stooping, and prolonged sitting with considerable pushing and pulling of arm and leg controls. Drivers must be physically able to move and assist wheelchair patrons on and off vehicles, and properly secure wheelchair users. In case of an accident or emergency, a driver may be required to remove passengers from the bus, particularly if the passenger is disabled. Environmental Conditions Employees in this class operate County Transit vehicles in a variety of weather conditions. Evaluation Content The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.Applicant Review Procedure Any applicant is entitled to a review of any determination or action taken by the County regarding the applicant's employment application. Inquiries should be directed to the County Human Resources Department.Purpose The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
