Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven's Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab's fiscal matters and its approximately $700 million annual budget. The Business Operations Office (BOO) within the Business Services Directorate (BSD) has an opening for a Business Specialist position in the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate (EPSD) Business Office. This individual will report to the EST and IS Business Operations Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Candidate will perform or support a wide variety of financial functions for the Energy and Photon Sciences Business Operations Office, including, but not limited to; financial analysis, complete proposal preparation, budgeting, labor cost distribution, expenditure forecasting, and reporting for various funding sources. Responsible for:
- Developing and maintaining budgets.
- Preparing and distributing monthly budget reports and other ad hoc financial reports within strict deadlines.
- Personnel forecasting and reviewing various reports for time reporting accuracy.
- Proposal preparation and support.
- Interacting with staff in order to secure information needed to generate forecasts, coordinate procurement actions, and reports.
- Operating in a team environment and remaining flexible with assignments.
- Creating journal vouchers/entries through PeopleSoft Financials with supporting documentation.
- Approving pre-vouchers, miscellaneous payments, and travel through PeopleSoft Financials.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - BA or BS degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent experience based on 2:1 (experience: college) years, plus four (4) years of related work experience.
- Working knowledge of Office365, especially Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Proven effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships at all levels.
- Knowledge of GAAP/CAS requirements as related to areas of responsibility.
- Intermediate proficiency in Excel and databases.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and effectively deal with deadlines.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and the ability to generate queries and reports.
- Ability to identify and understand the path to resolve most problems encountered within own area of responsibility; anticipate and establish paths to avoid problems.
- Must be self-motivated, resourceful and organized, taking ownership of all assigned work.
- Ability to establish routine contacts and provide detailed and complex information that will be used to make decisions of business consequence.
- Ability to review financial data and prepare meaningful financial reports.
- Flexible team player with the ability to successfully interact with both the scientific and business staff; and will be motivated to assist Senior Business specialists and Management as requests arise.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Seven (7) years of related work experience.
- Familiarity with PeopleSoft Financials and the ability to create queries and generate reports.
- Knowledge of BNL policies, practices, and procedures.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
- Familiarity with Power Business Intelligence.
- Familiarity with Workday.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements: - The ability to work at a computer/keyboard for extended periods is essential.
- Ability to concentrate on accuracy.
Compensation: Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $78,400 - $117,600 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
