Job Description:PRIMARY PURPOSE:The Registered Nurse is responsible forassessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care to meet the needsof the patient and his/her family during the preoperative and intraoperativeperiod. Basic leadership andcommunication skills are essential to form a working relationship withregistered Nurses, physicians, and ancillary health care personnel. Knowledgeof surgical procedures, instrumentation and equipment are required to deliversafe nursing careESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Complieswith established hospital customer service standards2. Demonstratesknowledge of pathophysiology, injuries and development3. Demonstratesknowledge of anatomy and physiology as related to the utilization ofinstruments, supplies and equipment4. Demonstratesknowledge of universal precautions5. Capableof performing all circulating and assigned support duties in a manner thatprovides high quality and safe surgical patient care6. Demonstratesknowledge of specimen handling during and after surgery7. Capableof performing scrub duties8. Knowledgeof proper performance and assembly of surgical instrumentation9. Demonstratesunderstanding of wound classifications, according to AORN and Joint CommissionStandards10. Demonstratesan ability to understand and comprehend verbal and written instructions11. Effectivelyevaluates and documents standards of care for each procedure12. Demonstratescompetency in psychomotor skills13. Demonstratesgood sterile technique14. Demonstratesa working knowledge of all electrical and power equipment used in the OR 15. Assistanesthesia with the various methods of induction, starting and administering IVtherapy16. Capableof calculating, preparing and administering pharmaceutical preparations17. Performsall documentation of operative record in a timely, accurate and concise manner18. Demonstratesan awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit functionand utilizes appropriate resources, to manage situations and minimize risk topatient, self and colleagues19. Must beavailable for ON CALL rotation,weekend and holiday coverage20. Maintainsa positive attitude when adjusting to changes and adapting to the needs of thedepartment21. BasicLife Support (BLS) certified, and Advanced Cardiac life Support (ACLS)22. Demonstratesawareness and sensitivity to patient/family rights with respect for dignity andconfidentiality23. Communicateseffectively with departmental staff to provide continuity of patient care24. Awarenessof the religious, ethical, sexual orientation, and cultural differences amongthe various population groupsSECONDARY:1. Demonstratescooperation and flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffingconflicts. 2. Willingto work overtime when emergency conditions require additional hours3. Demonstratesan ability to resolve difficult problems promptly and logically4. Participatesin data collection for research projects when necessary and appropriate5.
