Compensation:$43,000-$47,000-Commensurate with education and experienceCompensation Type:ExemptEmployment Type:Fixed Term (Fixed Term)Scheduled Weekly Hours:40Grade:E04Department:Community OutreachPosition SummaryUnder the supervision of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) Director, the Academic Advisor advises first year CAMP students and monitors their academic performance throughout their first year of college. The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing students with intrusive academic advisement counseling. Attends to student academic inquiries, assists in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advises on academic changes. Advises and assists students in developing individualized academic plans, class schedules, and transfer evaluations.Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists students in developing individualized academic plans. Assists in the verification of student eligibility and selection process.
  • Work closely with the program recruiter to coordinate a smooth transition for new program participants.
  • Gather and disseminate information on resources available to students at the institutional, local and national levels. Coordinates and/or facilitates presentations, program events/activities for CAMP students and/or the community.
  • Represents CAMP in committees and attends conferences at local and national levels.
  • Provides assistance with academic placement, career assessment, financial aid information and tutor availability to current program participants and program alumni.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of retention strategies. Serve as liaison between program participants and academic departments. Maintain and update student records/files, electronic and hard copies.
  • Produce reports detailing student progress.
  • Prepare and maintain program forms.
  • Responsible for overseeing the CAMP Peer Mentoring Program, supervising 2-7 peer mentors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the program director
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTSBachelors' degree in education, counseling or related field and two (2) to four (4) years' of experience in student advisement and/or mentoring, working with first-generation college students, low-income minority students in rural communities, and preparing and delivering presentations to high school and college students. Must maintain a strong background in postsecondary admissions process/requirements, financial aid, academic programs and staff supervision.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
  • Ability to effectively communicate college policy to students;
  • Strong collaborative/teamwork experience and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Ability to work with difficult/angry students;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Records maintenance skills;
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports;
  • Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments;
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information;
  • Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and/or expulsion;
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems;
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues;
  • Ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements;
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records;
  • Above average knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment with minimal lifting up to 25 lbs and frequent in state and occasional out-of-state travel.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • No or very limited physical effort required; up to 25 pounds
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
