Camp NurseJob DescriptionReports to: Head Nurse & Camp DirectorAcademy Camps is an overnight sports-specific sleepaway camp experience that takes place on the campuses Blair Academy (NJ) and Suffield Academy (CT). We're looking for experienced, organized, and empathetic Camp Nurses for our 2025 summer session on both campuses.Who we areAcademy Camps is a modern approach to the sports camp experience. We offer 1- and 2-week sessions for Boys & Girls aged 10 - 15 interested in baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, running, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, tennis & volleyball. Our campers choose one of our 13 Academy Sports and receive 2 intensive training sessions per day with our high-performance coaching staff.We are a dedicated team of high performance coaches, nurturing & exemplary counselors, and experienced camp professionals, passionate about the 'whole athlete'. Outside of sports specific training sessions, AC is distinguished in delivering programming focused on its pillars of Performance, Wellness, Mindset, and Leadership mixed in with a healthy dose of fun through a daily schedule of traditional sleepaway camp activities.The positionThe Camp Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff. As a Camp Nurse, you will work in collaboration with the full medical team of 3-4 nurses and an athletic trainer to care for ill or injured campers.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of camp staff and campers
  • Collaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needs
  • Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and treatment procedures
  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff
  • Set up/maintain the camp Health Center
  • Inventory and order any necessary medical supplies and equipment
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association Standards
  • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file
  • Prepare and utilize daily (CampMinder) medical log for treatment and medications
  • Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies
  • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp (as needed) including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, pool area, activity areas, and session 'bridge day' local out-of-camp trips (between Sessions 1, 2, 3, and 4)
  • Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed
  • Ensure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services (During the week of June 14 - 21)
  • Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid
  • Provide or ensure the orientation is provided that includes standing orders, clinic hours, specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, growth and development of age groups, staff health assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting
  • Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp
  • Verify health history and examination
  • Verify emergency authorization
  • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases
  • Conduct a health assessment
  • On camper arrival day: collect all medications used by campers and staff. Interface with parents to answer questions, get clarity on camper medical needs & medication distribution specifications, collect medications, and store them securely in the health center
  • On camper departure day: prepare any remaining medications to be distributed back to camper/camper families. Be available to answer parent/camper questions.
  • Provide leadership in the camp's risk management program.
  • Be responsible for contacting parents concerning the status of their child's health by telephone in the following situations: any injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/accident, etc.
  • Be knowledgeable of outside health resources.
  • Evaluate medical services.
  • Participate in supervising sanitary conditions throughout camp
  • Observe daily cleanliness in the food service facility and other areas throughout camp
  • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director
Your Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesQualifications for Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Registered nurse (RN) with a license as required by state law
  • CPR certified
  • Current First aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency management
  • Driver's license
  • Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care
  • Desire to work with children and young adults
  • Community health knowledge
Physical Aspects of the Job:
  • Ability to lift/assist campers and staff
  • Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters
  • Ability to use a telephone
  • Ability to maintain a written record system
  • Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property in the camp cart, vehicle, or walking
  • Observe and assess the sanitation and safety conditions of the camp
  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns
  • Possess endurance to meet emergency needs
  • Ability to drive in Academy Camps' insured car to off-camp health providers, physicians, or emergency treatment locations
Expectations, Compensation, and Benefits
  • Available and on-site for the dates of the full summer session including staff pre-season training and post-camp: June 14 - August 3
  • Room and board included on-site at our campus with access to state-of-the-art athletic facilities and highly rated dining services, providing a seamless and immersive nursing experience. Our dining hall can handle all common food allergies and provides dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegetarian food options at every meal.
  • The AC compensation package is competitive and is commensurate with skills and experience. Compensation for a full summer commitment is $8,000, includes room and board, and offers the opportunity to grow with Academy Camps as our presence expands regionally and nationally.
  • The Camp Nurse Teams consist of a Head Nurse and 3 full-time nurses. Every nurse works 28-35 hours per week and 9 total on-call shifts per summer. The shifts are from 7:45am to 2:45pm and 2:45pm to 9:45pm.
