Job Description:

Hampden-Sydney College has an immediate opening for a Campus Arborist. Reporting to the Superintendent of Grounds, Campus Arborist is responsible for supporting the College mission by maintaining and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the campus grounds through the cultivation and care of the shrubs and trees across campus. This position involves collaborating with campus stakeholders to create a safe, welcoming, and sustainable environment for students, faculty, and visitors, and plays a vital role supporting sustainable initiatives on campus.

Duties

Works to create and maintain a service first department that contributes to the long-term goal of being ranked #1 as the most beautiful college campus in America.

Conducts regular assessments of the trees and shrub on all college owned property. Evaluates and documents their health, structural integrity, and maintenance needs. Performs pruning, trimming, and shaping of trees and shrubs to promote healthy growth, ensure safety, and enhance aesthetics.

Responds promptly to tree-related emergencies, such storm damage, fallen limbs, and hazardous conditions. Coordinates with other departments in Facilities Management to restore campus operations as quickly and safely as possible.

Provides expertise on plant selection, placement, and maintenance for new construction and renovation projects.

Monitors and manages plant pest control, plant disease prevention, and other plant health issues. Implements an integrated pest management plan to prevent and control infestations.

Engages with the college community through workshops, seminars, and educational programs to promote an understanding of horticulture and sustainable landscaping practices. Collaborates with faculty to integrate arboretum management into relevant academic programs.

Implements and promotes environmentally friendly and sustainable practices into campus operations.

Creates and maintains and active digital tree and shrub inventory and management system to include year planted, species, location, health status, maintenance history, and maintenance requirements.

May be called upon to assist with lawn maintenance, plant, shrubbery trimming and maintenance as well as, including the use of power equipment. Picks up trash and debris from campus grounds, streets, walks and parking areas. Assists during any hazardous weather events as directed. Sweep and clean all driveways and walks, remove ice and snow and apply chemicals and sand as needed.

Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

High school diploma is required, along with minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Nationally recognized certification as Certified Arborist or Board-Certified Master Arborist, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture, Urban Forestry, or related fields, are preferred. Must have a valid driver's license.
