Position SummaryThe mission of Pierce College is to create quality educational opportunities for a diverse community of learners to thrive in an evolving world.The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for providing public safety and security for the College community by protecting college property, buildings, grounds, equipment, and other assets, located on campus grounds, owned or leased property. The Campus Safety Officer receives and processes reports, obtains statements, and conducts initial investigations of incidents, accidents, and complaints.Campus Safety Officers must be able to positively interact with a diverse campus community. They must have a service focus, and respond to emergency and crisis situations within the capabilities and limits of the Department's authority. Campus Safety Officers are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to report to work during emergencies.This position actively supports and engages in Pierce College's commitment to equity and inclusion, aiming to provide access and support for our diverse community of learners and our goal of becoming an anti-racist institution.Essential FunctionsThe Campus Safety Officer will be responsible for the following, but not limited to: Patrol on foot or in patrol vehicle to enforce institution laws and policies.Inspect buildings, grounds, doors, and gates for prowlers, damage, vandalism, or other crimes.Direct and regulate traffic, parking, and control access to facilities.Investigate accidents and crimes, administer first aid; issue citations for violations; gather evidence; locate witnesses; appear in court as required.Operate communications equipment, answer inquiries, take reports, and inspect/operate alarms, access control, and video surveillance systems.Assist law enforcement personnel upon request; report crimes and secure crime scenes.Act as a CLERY Campus Security Authority.Follow Pierce College District policies and procedures, Department policy and State law.Receive and process lost and found property.Identify property damage, equipment malfunctions, utility failures, or any other unusual, dangerous or suspicious situations.Respond to emergencies, accidents, altercations, alarms or disturbances.Assist with evacuations, crowd control, and provide services to the campus community, such as vehicle unlocks, escorts, battery jumps, and building unlocks.Issue parking permits, access cards, and keys as directed.Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education Required: High School Diploma or GED.Experience Required: Two (2) years' experience in public safety, law enforcement, or security OR equivalent combination of experience and education.Special Requirements: The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment.Must possess a valid Washington driver's license upon hire.Ability to obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within three (3) months of hire.Ability and willingness to work all shifts as well as weekends and holidays. This is a part-time (approximately 17 hours per week, not to exceed 69 hours per month) classified, overtime-eligible position with Pierce College District. This position is permanent after serving a six (6) month probationary period. Occasional travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours include eight-hour varying weekend shifts with some holidays. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. This position requires regular and consistent attendance. Shifts with the majority of time worked between 5:00pm and 7:00am will receive a shift premium of $2.50 per hour. Salary & BenefitsThe starting salary of this position is $25.34 an hour dependent upon qualifications, with periodic increments up to $30.86 an hour. This salary includes a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increase of 3% which becomes effective July 1, 2024. This position is not eligible for healthcare benefits.Physical Work EnvironmentThis position is required to work indoor and outdoor during inclement and extreme weather conditions. This position will patrol the campus in a Pierce College patrol vehicle. The Campus Safety Officer will be responsible for responding to incidents involving accidents, injuries, altercations and various hazardous situations (i.e. workplace violence, HAZMAT, and natural disasters). Safety requirements include use of personal protective equipment (PPE), First Aid, CPR, AED certification, Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) compliance.The incumbent must have the ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the position, which include walking, sitting, standing, or driving for a scheduled work shift; the ability to respond quickly on foot across the campus over varied terrain using stairs and up inclines; and ability to communicate and perform duties immediately upon arrival.Reasonable AccommodationApplicants with disabilities who require assistance with the application and employment process will be accommodated to the extent reasonably possible.
