Job Summary
Oberlin College's Campus Safety has an opening for a full time, continuing, Confidential Administrative Staff position with the internal rank of Supervisor. This positions reports to the Assistant Director of Campus Safety.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will have general responsibility for life and property protection on the campus and for facilitating the provision of general and emergency public safety services through supervision of personnel on an assigned shift.
Essential Job Functions
* Perform supervisory responsibilities over the work of other staff members on an assigned shift, including assigning work and deciding on procedures to coordinate staff members' work.
* Give staff members appropriate orders to maintain flow of assignments, providing positive feedback, guidance and counseling.
* Facilitate the patrol, security and service functions of Campus Safety officers, Communication officers, Student Patrol officers, Shuttle Drivers, Conservatory monitors, etc.
* In conjunction with other supervisors, develop schedules and provide ongoing training for Campus Safety officers and Communication officers.
* Perform and document follow-up investigations of all incidents occurring on an assigned shift, as necessary.
* Coordinate presentation of crime prevention information for assigned area.
* Meet on a regular basis with the Assistant Director of Campus Safety and/or the Director of Campus Safety to coordinate department responsibilities.
* Provide daily summaries of shift activity and/or oral briefing to oncoming shift, as required.
* Verify time clock/card information of subordinates prior to submission to the Assistant Director.
* Conduct patrol (mobile, bicycle, walking, etc.) of the campus on an assigned duty or shift.
* Provide safety and security services to specific areas as assigned.
* Perform some traditional law enforcement duties typically assigned to safety and security personnel.
* Respond promptly and professionally to requests from students, employees and visitors for emergency and general security and safety services.
* Enforce the rules, regulations and policies of the Office of Campus Safety, Oberlin College, as well as applicable local ordinances, state and federal laws necessary to maintain a peaceful and orderly academic environment.
* Conduct thorough security checks of all assigned college facilities in order to ensure their integrity and the safety of their inhabitants and contents.
* As assigned, conduct thorough investigations into incidents involving violation of College policy, criminal offenses or suspicious circumstances. This may include reviewing campus safety camera, electronic access records and other electronic resources.
* Submit comprehensive written reports on all incidents involving violation of College policies, criminal offenses or suspicious circumstances.
* Promptly correct and/or report to the appropriate College office, all observed safety, security, utility, environmental and fire hazards.
* Lock and unlock facilities as scheduled.
* Perform all safety and security services or emergency/general duties as instructed by the Director, and/or Assistant Director.
* Provide periodic inspections of various safety equipment located on campus.
* Stay well-informed and promote crime prevention and fire safety.
* Transmit or coordinate transmitting emergency messages when needed to the campus community
* Perform duties of a Campus Safety or Communication Officer, as necessary.
* Fulfill requirements of a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Jeanne Clery Act in relation to reporting crimes to law enforcement authorities.
Marginal Job Functions
Perform other related specialized operational functions within the Office of Campus Safety as assigned.
Required Qualifications
* Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or related field or a certificate from a public safety course demonstrating a commitment to providing safety and security (consideration will be given for related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience);
* must be at least 21 years of age with a valid Ohio driver's license and driving record which meets College insurability standards;
* willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime coverage for extracurricular campus events; excellent oral and written communication skills (letter of application demonstrating this ability is required);
* experience demonstrating the ability to interact in a sensitive, courteous and understanding way with members of a diverse residential and academic community, including students, faculty, staff and the general public; experience demonstrating the ability to handle several projects simultaneously, as well as the ability to maintain composure in emergency situations;
* experience demonstrating the willingness to work with management personnel to provide a safe and secure campus;
* excellent references.
