Scope:
- Responsible for providing high quality personal care and ancillary services (housekeeping, dietary, activities) to residents in assisted living/housing environment. Care services will be provided to residents that maintain their physical and emotional well-being while maintaining consistency with regulations and established best practices.
- Will also take work direction from the Director of Clinical Care and the Housing Administrator. The Care Attendant has frequent contact and communicates with staff, residents, family members, and visitors.
- Requires exceptional customer services skills and the ability to work calmly and effectively with the elderly. Experience providing person-directed care in long-term care, home care or assisted living settings is preferred. A Minnesota CNA certification is preferred and may be required for some levels of assisted living. Critical thinking, interpersonal effectiveness and teamwork skills are required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Resident Living and Life Enrichment - Maintain an environment that achieves high quality care (physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual) of residents and maintain their independence and dignity to the highest degree possible within the Knute Nelson continuum. Promote activities that help residents achieve their best day , filled with a wide variety of meaningful relationships and activities. Maintain effective communication systems with all customers. Identify, implement and include resident daily pleasures and interests into daily life based upon input from residents, families, friends and as directed by the activity department. Assist residents with activities of their choice including, group, individual or one on one activities. Take residents outdoors, or out in the facility community. Participate in special events. Engage residents individually or as a group to eliminate boredom, helplessness and loneliness. Perform miscellaneous tasks as needed for residents such as assisting with correspondence, reading/writing letters etc. Collaborate with the wellness program by embracing all the dimensions of wellness (spiritual, intellectual, physical, vocational, emotional, social, etc.) and providing hands on assistance when needed.
- Resident Care and Services - Provide residents individualized, direct care with activities of daily living which may include some or all of the following: showering, bathing, grooming, dressing, oral care, toileting, transferring, fingernail cares and foot cares. Will assist with meals, restorative care and life skills based upon resident preferences, regulations and established best practices. Maintain all required documentation in accordance with regulations and established clinical best practices. Performs medication administration and other delegated clinical procedures. Take and record temperature, weights, blood pressure, pulse and respiration as instructed and communicate any changes or concerns to the nurse. Observe client and communicate changes in physical and emotional condition. Support residents in self-care and provide care as necessary for those unable to care for their own needs. Observe residents closely, identifying changing needs and conditions at first indication, and reports immediately to supervisor as appropriate. Participate actively in the resident's care planning, serving as the residents' advocate in provision of care and honoring their preferences. Consistently work with all team members, led by resident and family preference to meet the needs and desires of all residents. Demonstrates flexibility in adjusting priorities in response to resident needs.
- Admissions - Welcome and greet new residents, families and friends. Ensure that resident's room is ready for receiving the resident. Participate in the orientation of the new resident and family members/friends to the housing environment. Help resident feel comfortable and welcomed. Maintain a working knowledge of Knute Nelson and its programs, services and sites. Provide answers to questions and provide assistance to visitors of the housing division.
- Customer Meals - Assist in preparing, storing, and serving meals, beverages and snacks for residents/customers based upon resident requests, regulations, established polices procedures and best practices. Set and clear tables, assist residents with menu selection, meal and beverage service, and clean the eating room according to established procedures and schedules. Clean dishes, equipment and work area according to established procedures and schedules. Create a positive eating experience for customers that promotes their independence, choice and overall well-being. Encourage resident participation in the meal program, and meal activities.
- Homemaking and Laundry - Maintain uncompromising levels of cleanliness in the Household and/or common areas. Maintain an attractive, comfortable, and clean home in an environment consistent with regulations and established policies and procedures and best practices. Respect resident time and property; treat them with courtesy and respect their personal belongings. Recognizes their role as a guest in the resident's home. Coordinate work with the team to ensure the housekeeping needs are met within the staffing resources. Maintain supply of all materials to meet resident needs. Assist residents as needed to wash, fold and sort residents' personal laundry; supports residents in self-care and provide assistance to ensure residents' personal laundry is maintained in quality condition. Performs laundry and linen changes.
- Other Duties As Assigned - Participate and assist with evacuation procedures in case of fire, disaster or other occurrences requiring the tenant be moved. Practice proper body mechanics and include safe practices into all job duties. Assists in special projects as needed. Practice infection control procedures. Assists in maintaining stock supplies. May assist staff with event preparation and clean-up. Required to complete assigned online education modules within designated timeframes and additional memory loss training. Education and Experience Required:
- A Minnesota CNA certification is preferred and may be required for some levels of assisted living.
- Critical thinking, interpersonal effectiveness and teamwork skills are required.
- Must complete and pass a state required background study.
- Able to physically perform the duties required by the position.
- Required to have the ability to read, write and speak English well enough to communicate with staff, residents and visitors.
