Job Description:

The Career Counselor is responsible for coordinating and supervising career planning programs for undecided students and providing counseling services on an individual and group basis, using aptitude, personality, interest, and values inventories and computer guidance systems. This position will also present outreach programming and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and student organizations.

This position will serve as a liaison between career development, academic advising, and new student programs in the Manhattanville University community. The selected candidate must possess a commitment to effectively serving a diverse student population, a strong desire to work collaboratively, and an understanding of social justice. Familiarity with the Life Design career advising framework desired, as well as NACE Career Readiness Competencies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

* Co-hire, train and supervise student assistants.

Duties/Responsibilities:

* Counsel undecided (re: career direction) and undeclared (re: major) undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni both individually and in groups. Administer assessment instruments (Focus2) and computerized career guidance systems as needed.

* Assist students and alumni in the development of career materials (resumes, cover letters, graduate school applications) and career readiness skills (interviewing, networking, job search strategies)

* Plan/Develop/Facilitate new career events and initiatives to address career needs and create opportunities for engagement and connections with employers and alumni; Partner with academic advisors, and other staff to provide programming

* Lead workshops and give presentations on career related topics to classes and student groups/organizations

* Meet with prospective and admitted students and their parents/family members during appropriate campus programs (Open House, Accepted Students Days, Admissions Events, etc.)

* Work with career center team to increase student participation in internships and other experiential activities

* Assist in reviewing and developing career resources, materials, and event marketing

* Provide guidance with internship and job searches

* Assist in other departmental activities, events and programs that align with the center's mission, including career fairs, orientation, visit days, and community outreach

* Participate in activities in line with the Division of Academic Affairs' overall mission.

Required Skills/Abilities:

* Ability to effectively counsel/advise University students in areas of career planning and academic development

* Knowledge of and experience in utilizing career assessment tools and platforms for student career guidance

* Strong interpersonal skills, including oral, written, and listening communication capabilities

* Knowledge of job search strategies and career development theories, best practices, and resources

* Ability to plan, organize and coordinate events and programs

* Ability to take initiative, multi-task, provide attention to detail, and consistently report updates to the team

* Ability to build relationships across populations, internal and external to the University

* Strong computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, career management systems (Handshake), and visual design software (Canva, or similar.)

Qualifications:

Education: A master's degree in counseling, higher education administration, or related field.

Experience:

At least one year of experience in advising, counseling, or career services required; two to three years of experience working with undecided University students preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Salary:

The annual salary for this position is $62,400.

Hours Expectation:

Full-time, 35 hours per week
