CARPENTER JOURNEYMAN

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Carpenter - Journeyman

EMPLOYEE TYPE: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Foreman

OVERVIEW

A Journeyman Carpenter constructs, erects, installs and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood and patent type form systems using hand tools and power tools within tolerances that conform to drawings and specifications, as well as directing and training Carpenter helpers to do the same.

WORK SCHEDULE

Varies by location. Must have open availability any time, any day of the week. Length of employment is limited to job assignment and/or project duration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

* Carpentry Safety - work safely around the hazards associated with the construction field.

* Carpentry Tools - use hand, electric, pneumatic and hydraulic tools in a safe manner.

* Construction Math - Demonstrates a level of competency in construction math as required in trade practice, including fractions, decimals, geometry, use of formulae, and trigonometry.

* Drawing and Detail Sheets - Identify parts and types of drawings and interpret drawings.

* Blue Print Reading - Read blueprint plans and elevations, and interpret civil blue prints to perform erection tasks.

* Identify parts and sizes of panels, and assemble patented forms.

* Identify patented form hardware.

* Identify parts of a form and purpose of each.

* Identify and use form hardware to erect forms.

* Identify nail types and sizes.

* Identify lumber by size and grade.

* Identify reinforcing steel.

* Set anchor bolts and embeds.

* Perform basic rebar tying.

* Perform layouts from centerlines drawn by engineer.

* Build prefab forms from sketch or drawing.

* Build radius forms, haunch forms, and fireproof beams, install block outs and pipe sleeves.

* Layout and build templates for anchor bolts.

* Set door frame and windows according to specifications.

* Form beams, columns and elevated slabs with patent forms using blueprints and detail.

* Form foundations from blueprints.

* Use a framing square for layout work.

* Have a knowledge of, understand and practice OSHA rules for scaffolds and ladders.

* Know and understand hand signals and utilize to signal equipment operators.

* Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy.

* Follow oral and written directions.

* Work within company policies (including Safety and Human Resources policies), client policy and OSHA safety requirements.

* Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor as needed.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

* Four (4) years minimum heavy industrial field experience as a Carpenter.

* Completion of pre-hire and post-hire substance abuse testing as required by company and/or client.

* Completion of Safety related certifications such as OSHA 10 or Safety council programs as required by company and/or client.

* Ability to work with others to achieve job goals.

* Read, write and communicate using English language sufficient to perform job functions as required by client and/or facility policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Stand or walk for long periods of time.

* Use arms and hands to reach for, handle or manipulate objects.

* Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally lifting items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.

* Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds and other objects.

* Stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.

* Acceptable eyesight - naturally or with correction.

* Eye-hand coordination.

* Good physical fitness.

* Good sense of balance.

* Work at great heights is required.

* 7/8 Scaffold ratchet wrench

* 2' level

* Utility knife

* and 1 Wood chisels

* Brace with assortment bits thru 2 by 16ths

* Expansion bit with 2 cutters

* Screw drivers (flat tip)

* Screw drivers (Phillip's head)

* Tin snips

* Torpedo level

* Rain Coat or Poncho

* Steel toed or Composite toed Work Boots

ENVIRONMENT

Construction workers perform physically demanding work including lifting and carrying heavy objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling in awkward positions. Some work at great heights, or outdoors in all weather conditions. Some jobs expose workers to harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, loud noise or dangerous machinery. Some workers may be exposed to lead based paint, asbestos, or other hazardous substances during their work especially when working in confined spaces. To avoid injury, workers in these jobs wear safety clothing/personal protective equipment such as gloves, hard hats, protective chemical suits, and devices to protect their eyes, respiratory system and hearing. While working in underground construction, Construction workers must be especially alert to safely follow procedures and must deal with a variety of hazards.
