Position Purpose/Summary

APPLICATION FOR CITY OF SPRINGFIELD LABOR SERVICE
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed. The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules.
Responsible for carpentry related maintenance and repair of City buildings. Work is performed under supervision of a Foreman in accordance with accepted trade practices with review through inspections during process and upon completion for conformance to established departmental standards. Supervision may be exercised over assigned helpers.
Essential Functions
* Constructs, alters, and repairs City structures.
* Repairs and maintains doors, hinges, drywall, suspended ceilings, tile, outside decks and stairs.
* Builds offices, classrooms, closets through framing, dry walling and trimming.
* Installs whiteboards, shelving and overhead screens.
* Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment processes, and techniques of the work performed.
* Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in work performed.
* Some knowledge of the fundamentals of a variety of skilled trades.
* Ability to work from written and oral instructions, sketches, and drawings.
* Ability to supervise the work of assigned helpers.
* Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials employed in the work performed.
Education and Experience
* High school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by training in a specialized trade.
* Minimum of three years of experience in the work performed
