Description
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level to construct, maintain and repair structures, facilities, articles of wood and other building materials for the City of Alexandria.
Examples of Duties
Performs general carpentry work in the construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, closures, hardware, suspended ceilings, windows, screens, scaffolds, wood fixtures, cabinets, trim, fences, furniture, forms, frames, shelves and related items; determines the appropriate method to complete work.
Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop; operates machinery and equipment related to the trade.
Participates in related building tasks; hangs sheetrock, paneling, doors and other building materials.
Maintains and cleans shop area, ensuring the cleanliness and proper operation of the work area, equipment and trucks; conducts daily inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure proper and safe operations; reports repair needs and unsafe conditions to supervisor for resolution.
Prepares estimates of quantities and types of labor and materials required to complete assigned jobs; maintains inventory of materials and equipment required to complete assigned tasks.
Prepares and processes related paperwork and reports as required by the department to include work logs, time sheets, paint files and related information; reviews field drawings, sketches, blueprints and other drawings to complete project work.
May assist with other trades as necessary and assigned; performs metal work, light fabrication and welding; assists with minor electrical and plumbing activities.
Operates a city vehicle in performance of duties and heavy equipment to include pick-up truck, boom lifts, backhoes, forklifts and bucket trucks.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, with vocational or technical school training in carpentry; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in apprentice level carpentry in an industrial, residential, or commercial setting; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one month of hire.
