Position Summary

The Manager, Leave Management directly oversees and maintains the Workers' Compensation (WC) administration program ensuring compliance with all State and Federal laws. Serves as a liaison on all matters involving WC and provides subject matter expertise to not only the WC team members but also to Management and across the greater HR team. Leverages experience and industry knowledge to work collaboratively with our third-party Administrator, expertly manage multiple projects and execute process improvement initiatives. This position reports to the Director, Leave Management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with policy/provisions according to state and federal regulations while taking into consideration the provision of the various collective bargaining agreements.
  • Serves as an expert resource on case management, requirements and SOPs which include new initiatives under the general direction and guidance of HR leadership and consultation from the law department.
  • Assesses company liability and exposure to workplace injuries; uses independent judgement in all areas including claim investigations, settlements, and litigation.
  • Responsible for the oversight of claim management and communication with employees, managers, attorneys, and Third-Party Administrator (TPA).
  • Identifies and develops solutions to address issues and trends in work injuries; develops and strengthens communication with departmental absence support teams and front-line management.
  • Collaborates with business leaders in the identification, development, organization and execution of safety initiatives.
  • Participates in claim reviews, audits and service calls with insured and prospective insureds.
  • Proactively provides positive guidance and ongoing education to internal and external customers as it pertains to workers' compensation claims.
  • Manages all workers' compensation reports to claims, and partners with business leaders to identify preventative opportunity areas; serves as primary point of escalation to resolve employee case issues which include partnering with internal departments and/or TPA employees.
  • Provides reporting and analysis of workers' compensation drivers and trends including measurement of success through key-performance indicators.
  • Participates in Executive-led safety meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Provides comprehensive performance management of WC Specialists and Administrators by actively providing guidance, direction, mentorship and coaching to shape and hone daily operations and beyond.
  • Participates in special projects, audits, hearings/depositions and other duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience handling workers' compensation claims.
  • 3+ years of experience in people management (preferably having managed a team of workers' compensation claim adjusters).
  • Organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to handle fast-paced environment and multiple priorities.
  • Must be able to regularly exercise discretion, handle conflict and be firm when required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with third party service providers and all levels of employees.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally and work beyond standard office hours, including holidays and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in HR or a related field.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • PHR or SPHR certification.
  • Experience in implementing WC programs.
  • Experience in defining and implementing detailed WC business processes.
