Job Description:
Purpose The primary function of the Cashier is to ensure that each customer that comes into the Co-op has a consistent, positive experience when checking out at the store. Cashiers ensure daily tasks are completed throughout the day, on time. Responsibilities for the front-end cashiers are, but are not limited to, customer service, cash register operation, stocking, facing, and cleaning. Status
  • Part Time: 16-24 hours per week
    • schedule must remain flexible, and can work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Essential Responsibilities
  • At the Till
    • You should never be out of sight of the front door
    • If there is customer in the store, always be in sight of the tills.
    • If you are not ringing up/helping a customer:
      • Work on the in between customers task card
      • Complete the To-Do List that is located in between both registers.
      • Complete a task off the task list, and initial it once the task has been completed.
      • Face shelves in the store that are in eyesight of the tills/front door.
      • Complete any other tasks assigned by the Front-End Manager or MOD.
    • If not helping or ringing up a customer, answer the phone on the 1st-2nd
    • Familiarize yourself with the Cashier Information Binder; refer to it when needing help with a front-end procedure.
    • Perform price overrides, exchanges, and/or returns as needed that are within our Return Policy Guideline.
    • Provide the cashier at the tills backup when the need is requested, or you see the need for the help.
  • Opening the Store
    • Complete all opening tasks as listed in the Cashier Information Binder by opening (9am Monday-Saturday, and 10am on Sundays)
      • Contact the MOD if any emergencies arise including: no cash in the safe, equipment failure, missing 2nd opener (if applicable), accidents/injuries to staff, or evidence of a break-in.
    • Closing the Store
      • Complete all closing tasks on the closing cards and as listed in the Cashier Binder prior to departing.
      • Ensure all 3 doors (front, side, and garage) are locked, and the OPEN sign is off.
      • All employees who are closing must exit together to ensure everyone makes it safely to their car (or any other form of transportation) safely.
  • Communication
    • Check in with your supervisor at the beginning and end of each shift.
    • You must always wear/possess a walkie and a phone with you.
      • provide back up to other clerks or departments when needed or as delegated by the Front-End Manager.
    • In the absence of other employees in your department, you may be delegated certain tasks/responsibilities that are not stated in your job description but will be delegated as needed by the Front-End Manager.
    • Participate in all department meetings & 1-1's with the Front-End Manager.
      • Report any comments, suggestions, concerns, and/or personnel issues with your Front-End Manager in your 1-1.
Organizational Relationships
  • Communicate scheduling needs and PTO requests at least 4 weeks in advance.
  • Show leadership and take initiative in covering department responsibilities in the event of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Participate in all department meetings, including meeting with the General Manager at least bi-weekly for a 1-on-1. Report any concerns or suggestions at 1-on-1's.
Customer Service
  • Treat every customer with exceptional service.
    • Answer customers questions to the best of your ability or find someone who can answer their question(s).
  • Always ensure the front-end is attended to and customers are promptly welcomed.
  • Greet customers when they are ready to be rung up, and ensure they were able to find everything they were looking for.

  • Ability to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, telephone, and various office equipment continuously.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally with team effort.
  • Ability to sit, bend, stand, stoop, squat, kneel, climb stairs or ladder for up to an entire scheduled shift.
  • Ability to reach above shoulder height occasionally.
  • Ability to talk and hear to communicate with customers.
  • Finger and hand dexterity with ability to grasp and hold items of different sizes.
  • Vision ability - close, distance, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to read register screen and product and shelf labels.
Working Conditions The work environment described here is representative of the conditions an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • Frequent exposure to cold, hot, wet, or humid conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, hazardous materials ranging from natural to chemical (store products, cleaning products, scents from working in a public setting).
  • Exposure to and potential handling of fresh foods including meats and seafood.
  • May work occasionally in temperature extremes (walk-in freezer, outside warehouse, hot kitchen, etc.).
  • Noise level in the store is usually moderate to loud.
