Wieland is hiring a Caster. The Caster is responsible for the mixing, melting, skimming, and pouring of metal within all specified temperature, alloy, and other quality standards. This role works as part of a team with other Casters to perform work safely and efficiently. Casters will also perform maintenance as required and administrative duties as assigned.
This role is located in East Alton, IL and will be fully on-site.
Starting Pay: $35.75/hour
Schedule: Rotating Swing Shift (Days, Afternoons, Midnights)
Pay Schedule: Bi-weekly
Responsibilities
Caster Responsibilities:
Work in alignment with Wieland's core values and abide by the 8 Golden Rules of Safety. - Remove dross, slag, or impurities from the molten metal using a ladle or spoon.
- Make necessary additions to the molten metal in the furnace to ensure the chemistry follows the company's standard as displayed on the operating procedures.
- Continually monitor furnace performance and temperature to ensure an overheat situation does not occur.
- Read schedules and work orders to determine proper setups, temperatures, and settings for cast materials.
- Pour molten metal into ladles, molds, and furnaces.
- Operate/Utilize a gantry crane to charge materials into the melting furnaces or perform other tasks as needed.
- Smooth and clean the inner surfaces of molds, using brushes, scrapers, air hoses, or grinding wheels, and fill imperfections with refractory material.
- Maintain inventories of materials.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained and operated per Wieland policies and health and safety regulations; report service requests as needed.
- Collaborate with the maintenance department to complete tasks to minimize downtime.
- Work with team members to achieve department goals.
- Adhere to Wieland and OSHA safety procedures and job-specific safety practices, and report issues to the Supervisor, Safety, or HR.
- Follow daily procedures, work instructions, control plans, and protocols outlined during orientations and training.
- Attend meetings and refresher courses to ensure proper equipment operation.
- Perform general laborer tasks as required.
- Maintain daily housekeeping of the work area.
- Perform routine inspections of products as needed.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Caster Qualifications:
- Adherence to health and safety regulations, including consistent use of protective gear.
- Competency in reading a tape measure, micrometer, and vernier caliper.
- Ability to work to a high standard of accuracy within a timely manner.
- Problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot machine quality issues.
- Capability to stand, balance, walk, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently stoop, bend, twist, or crouch.
- Ability to climb stairs to and from work areas frequently.
- Dependable and consistent attendance.
- Ability to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
- Manual dexterity for handling and manipulating items.
- Strong judgment and ability to ask questions when needed.
- Attention to detail and consistent alertness to ensure safety.
- Prioritization of safety in all tasks.
- Ability to stoop, reach, kneel, twist, and walk while handling products.
- Vision abilities, including close vision, color vision, and focus adjustment.
- Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Metals manufacturing experience preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Three years of manufacturing experience preferred.
