Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instructors:
- Prepare for and teach all scheduled classes according to the established curriculum guidelines
- Developing lessons and curriculum as needed
- Assist students with course material outside of regular class hours as needed
- Complete program-related administrative responsibilities (keep attendance records, communicate with office, help plan and participate in program events)
- Participate in faculty meetings as assigned
- Assistant Lead Instructor (all of above, plus):
- Assists other instructors with their courses
- Distributes course flyers for posting.
- Lead Instructor (all of above, plus):
- Assists other instructors with their courses
- Distributes course flyers for posting
- Coordinates handling of Japanese conversation partners
- Reviews UH Form 9 collected from new conversation partners applicants
- Communicates with staff for planning and running the courses.
Minimum Qualifications
- Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese.
- The ability to communicate in English.
- A minimum of 6 months of teaching experiences.
- Bachelor's from a four-year higher education institution in Japan/US in related fields to the Japanese language/culture/history, equivalent, or a Bachelor's in Education.
- Familiarity with Zoom application.
- Demonstrated ability to work with adult learners and communicate clearly.
- If qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting the minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.
Desirable Qualifications
- A few years of teaching experience at post-secondary level of education.
- Master's in Japanese, Linguistics, Education, or Second Language Studies, or Master's in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Japanese.
- Familiarity with communicative language teaching approaches.
