The Category Manager is responsible for procuring, developing, coordinating programs within assigned category areas to achieve corporate goals by maximizing sales, inventory, and gross margin dollars. The objectives will be met through focused merchandise assortments, productive marketing, sound negotiations and merchandise management. Merchandise is purchased to maximize results while enhancing the overall divisions and company strategies.

Responsibilities:
  • Evaluates, selects and procures products and services of acceptable quality and quantity.
  • Responsible for communicating and negotiating the best programs available through suppliers and vendors.
  • Utilizes inventory management software to ensure proper inventory ordering and stock replenishment at all locations.
  • Reviews and analyzes sales and gross profit contributions for each category and individual product movement within categories.
  • Participates in the development of floorplan design and merchandise placement in new and existing locations.
  • Reviews and analyzes inventory and turns to maximize profitability
  • Conducts an annual review of assortments to support company goals and customer expectations
  • Keeps informed of new products and programs by competitive store visits, vendor contacts and trade magazine articles.
  • Works with vendors to minimize cost and maximize margins in assigned categories.
  • Works with vendors on new products, discontinued products, in and out of distributions, additional demands, promotions, reduction of out of stocks and processing credits and returns.
  • Develops and coordinates promotional programs, advertising and POS with vendors and ensure communication and implementation at store level.
  • Analyzes results of promotional activity within assigned categories.
  • Completes competitive market surveys as necessary. Makes retail adjustments based on findings of surveys.
  • Develops and implements product plan-o-grams for assigned categories based upon sound Category analysis.
  • Communicates with all departments to ensure effective implementation of marketing programs.
  • Executes sales, margin and inventory plans, to achieve corporate goals.
  • Participates in weekly and/or monthly Merchandising meetings, present reports and analysis, discussing issues and action items.
  • Assists with all supply chain functions as required.
  • Visits stores monthly to review POG and Set integrity and reviews assortments with DMs and store management.
  • Works at store level with DMs and Store Managers implementing store sets and gathering important store information.
  • Works with Category Specialist (s) providing guidance on pricing, costing and vendor support
  • Provide friendly and competent customer service.
  • Report for work in a timely manner when scheduled.

  • Assists in other duties, as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience (include certs or licenses needed):

  • Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or Marketing, or entry-level related experience and/or training, equivalent combination of education and experience, with entry level related purchasing experience is required.
  • 4+ years of Purchasing and/or Category Management experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills with effective follow-up and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Problem analysis and resolution at both a strategic and functional level.
  • Technical skills in strategic planning and marketing.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate the latest industry trends.
  • Ability to present professionally and effectively before groups of customers, vendors and employees.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel experience required.
  • Must be able to communicate in English. IF APPLICABLE
  • Able and willing to deliver friendly, courteous, and prompt customer service.
  • Able and willing to work cooperatively with other team members.
  • Must be able to work 50 hours or more a week, work weekends, travel and stay overnight if needed to complete business.
