  • A Cement Finisher does skilled work in mixing, placing, and finishing concrete; and may be required to act as head worker on a small crew providing direction and guidance. REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
  • Four years of full-time paid experience with the City of Los Angeles in a class at the level of Cement Finisher Worker performing duties in mixing, placing, and finishing concrete surfaces; or
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a cement finisher; or
  • Four years of full-time paid experience as a cement finisher helper performing duties in mixing, placing, and finishing concrete surfaces.
  • PROCESS NOTES
  • Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
  • Some positions may require a valid California Class B driver's license and valid medical certificate approved by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles, prior to appointment. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI). For positions requiring a valid Class B driver's license, candidates will be asked to submit a commercial driving history in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles CVC Section 1808.1 prior to appointment.

In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Mathematics; Attention to Detail; Composure; Teamwork; Oral Communication; Reading Comprehension, including: how to read construction plans and sketches for concrete work; Safety Focus, including: Cal/OSHA regulations and safety principles and practices related to personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment, traffic control procedures found in the WATCH (Work Area Traffic Control) Handbook; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: terminology commonly used in concrete finishing; basic methods of repairing concrete; techniques for mixing concrete, rock, sand, and cement ratios, the use of additives and special agents, and visual inspection of mix designs; form setting standards and specifications; appropriate methods for placing concrete; tools commonly used in cement work; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.
