Summary About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities. Responsibilities Provide information and assistance for the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY Cemetery in the planning and conduct of interments and internments. Provide information, advice, and assistance to the next of kin, and general public, on the erection of the monuments and eligibility for burial within the West Point cemetery. Upon receipt of requests for interment/inurnment, check records to assure that no previous commitment has been made of a grave site or that a columbarium niche is previously assigned. Determine eligibility from appropriate record sources, and arrange the appropriate service with the funeral director, next of kin, or family representative. Coordinate support for funerals with internal USMA organizations such as Chaplain, Band and Superintendent's Representative. Establish and maintain files and records. Conduct quality control inspections of all applicable cemetery contracts and report results to the Contracting Officer's Representative. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) researching records or systems in order to extract information; (2) ensuring compliance with regulations for facility/site, such as headstone or gravesite restrictions; and (3) coordinating services or organization participation for events, such as scheduling Band, Chaplain, or other representatives for funerals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Administration and Management Customer Service (Clerical/Technical) Information Management Reasoning (Clerical/Technical) Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06). Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
