General Statement of Job

Under limited supervision, performs specialized customer service and technical work in the efficient and effective operations of the Cemetery office and ground operations. Performs related work as required in a professional, high visibility and medium to high stress environment. Weekday hours, weekends as required. Reports to the Parks and Public Lands Assistant Manager

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Oversees all aspects of managing a municipal cemetery. Including highly technical office administration and sales; daily attention to cemetery grounds, roads and structures.

Opens facility and prepares for customers; closes facility at scheduled times and performs closing procedures including, printing daily financial reports, processing routine paperwork, making bank deposits, clearing and securing building.

Provides superior customer service in assisting citizens with the purchase and selection of grave space(s) and cremation sites. Prepares the necessary documentation for each purchase to include interment arrangements, deed preparation, marking of spaces to facilitate vault companies, opening/closing of grave sites and coordination with funeral homes for requested burial.

Records and maintains all documentation related to lot purchases, perpetual care funds, deed recording with Osceola County Clerk's office and site monitoring fees. Enters data into and manages the Cemetery Information Management System for the purpose of providing our citizens with information on specific burials, such as, location, pertinent dates and other related data.

Issues monument permits and identifies specific/accurate locations to assist monument companies in the placement of monuments at grave sites.

Supervises various contractors in regard to mowing and landscaping maintenance, repairs to cemetery facilities, addresses safety and security issues to keep our citizens safe while on cemetery property.

Supervises staff in day to day operations, including marking graves, coordination of logistics for upcoming funerals.

Recommends cemetery project priorities and assists with capital improvements.

Monitors revenue stream and trends to achieve fiscal goals. Manages expense budget for Cemetery division.

Operates vehicles and a variety of hand and power tools. Exercises care and safety in the use of assigned equipment and vehicles.

Maintains neatness and cleanliness of facility area while performing routine custodial and grounds maintenance functions.

Ensures the ordering and delivery of supplies in a timely manner. Maintains organization of department resources.

Minimum Education and Training

Requires a High School diploma or GED, Associates Degree preferred; supplemented by two (2) to three (3) years' experience in office management/customer service, cemetery operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess and maintain a valid state of Florida driver's license. May be required to have certification in CPR and first aid. Must possess or obtain the most current FEMA 100, 200, and 700 Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of appointment to the job.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Skill Requirements:

Is knowledgeable in the methods, policies and procedures of specific departmental duties of the Cemetery Sexton. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has experience processing Deeds, as well as, using Cemetery Information Management System software. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information. Has thorough knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, spelling and basic mathematics. Has excellent clerical, bookkeeping, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Has comprehensive knowledge of the computer and other technical terminology used within the department; has skills in the use of computers for data and word processing. Knows how to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment as necessary in the performance of daily activities. Is skilled in applying a responsible attention to detail, as necessary in preparing reports and records. Is able to read and interpret a variety of materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to maintain files and records accurately and with confidentiality as required. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

Is able to provide assistance to various departments, supervisors, co-workers and the general public as needed. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Knows how to perform duties in a courteous manner and communicate effectively with a variety of public and private groups as prescribed. Is able to work effectively despite interruptions; is able to balance multiple talks and tight deadlines. Is capable of working under stressful conditions as required and remain compassionate with customers. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a vehicle, various hand and power tools, a variety of office equipment including a computer, telephone, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of remaining on feet for extended periods of time, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds) to heavy weight (up to 50 pounds).

Responsibilities:

Works primarily in an office and cemetery environment.
