Title
Central Services Specialist - BMH - 1st Shift - FT
The Central Services Specialist is a certified technician that is responsible for processing complex instrumentation including flexible and rigid endoscopes, power instrumentation, laparoscopic/robotic instrumentation, ophthalmology instrumentation and other specialized instrument sets. The specialist also assists in providing in-service education to staff on new instruments, processing scopes and high risk/low frequency skills. Additional responsibilities include ordering specialty instrumentation and assisting with preventative maintenance on power equipment including drills and saws. Responsibilities may include sending instrumentation out for repairs and maintaining par levels of backup instrumentation. The Central Service specialist coordinates and collaborates with the Lead Technician and Clinical Specialists of specialty areas to promote safe efficient care. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
In addition to the knowledge, abilities, experience, and skills required for a C S Technician I and a C S Technician II, the successful candidate will possess:
* High school diploma or general education degree (GED), experience in the care of a variety of endoscopes and medical instrumentation, and 3-5 years of experience in a Central Services/Sterile Processing unit required
* Certified Surgical Technologist, OR
* Certified Central Services Technician through IAHCSMM or CBSPD
* Knowledge and experience in the care of endoscopic, power, and robotic instruments and equipment
* Experience with the processing of flexible endoscopes
* Ability to work independently and effectively alone or as a member of a collaborative team
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
This position involves work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of specialized technical duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
* Demonstrate the ability to clean, decontaminate, inspect, store, and prepare flexible gastrointestinal (GI) and pulmonary endoscopes
* Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot, test, and maintain (basic maintenance) of equipment used for high-level disinfection (HLD) and sterilization
* Demonstrate the ability to review the surgical schedule, identify items needed for surgical procedures, and setting priorities to ensure items are ready prior to case start time
* Provide in-service education to co-workers and others on the care and use of instrumentation, power equipment, and endoscopes
* Demonstrate ability to develop standard work processes tor the performance of work tasks
* Monitor instruments and equipment that is down for repair to ensure timely return to service
* Serve as a clinical specialty resource for various surgical specialties
* Ability to troubleshoot issues that arise with surgical instrumentation and supplies
* Ability to be proactive and to speak up to prevent the costs associated with large repair bills of complex or delicate equipment
* Ability to set priorities, be detail-oriented, function independently, demonstrate initiative, effective stress, organization, and time management skills, and to work efficiently to complete work responsibilities
* Cleaning/Maintenance of all scopes 50%
