POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Athletic Trainer will lead in the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of student-athletes' injuries, as well as provide care for high school athletic programs in both practice and interscholastic competition settings. The Athletic Trainer will run professional development as needed for coaches as it relates to wellness and fitness of athletics, including CPR/AED/First Aid training and support. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of all personnel within this position. The Athletic Trainer will practice said profession within the parameters of the Connecticut Athletic Trainers Licensing Law as laid out by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health, and will follow both the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association. The Athletic Trainer will work under the direction of a team physician as determined by the Newington Public Schools and or the district medical advisors. These duties are based on the needs of the school and its athletic programs. The Athletic Trainer's duties, enumerated in this document, should not be considered all inclusive. The Athletic Director, as necessary, shall modify duties. The Athletic Trainer will be present at home athletic contests and practices and shall attend other post-season and home hosted events as directed by the Athletic Director.
- Establish an effective athletic training program for the high school athletic department.
- Provide first aid and injury assessment/treatment/rehabilitation/reconditioning for Newington Public Schools student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer will also be responsible for making appropriate physician referrals as stated in the scope of practice designated by the State of Connecticut.
- Provide medical coverage at home events and practices from the beginning of the fall sport season, including preseason needs for the program, to the conclusion of the spring season.
- Assist in coordination of the annual required athletic physicals and supervise the clearance of injured athletes prior to and during the sports season.
- Maintain a line of communication with the team physician(s) and school nurse regarding athletic health care and recommended treatment/rehabilitation for all athletic injuries, including concussion and return to learn protocol.
- Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport specific conditioning programs and methods.
- Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room.
- Maintain communication with parents on the care and treatment of their student-athlete(s).
- File all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents using HIPPA compliant procedures.
- Maintain a daily treatment log and provide seasonal analytics to the Athletic Director
- Oversee ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training rooms and maintain an up to date inventory.
- Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment.
- Equip each team with appropriate medical equipment.
- Assist in the selection and fitting of protective equipment, including special taping, pads, braces, or helmets (football), etc.
- Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks at all athletic facilities, both on campus and off campus. This includes regular education on both heat and cold safety.
- Share professional literature relative to athletic training with the school's coaching staff and provide necessary education. This includes attending pre-season coaches meetings and provide annual reviews as required.
- Perform bi-annual concussion baseline testing of all student-athletes using ImPACT.
- Maintain records of concussion occurrences and coordinate care for student-athletes with their medical team.
- Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff to support the performance growth of in-season athletes while reducing injury risk.
- Acquire and maintain CPR instructor certification to recertify coaching staff as necessary.
- Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and compliance with student, family and staff information in accordance with State, Federal and local policy and laws.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and successful passing of a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification (BOC).
- Certified First Aid/CPR/AED training
- Prior experience in a high school or college sports setting.
- Effective communication skills both written and spoken; strong interpersonal and collaborative skills; strong work ethic; flexibility; and compassion.
- Valid licensure with the State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health in good standing.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
- Maintain current certification and continuing education requirements as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and Board of Certification.
- Maintain current state licensure in accordance with the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health.
