Position Summary

The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for carrying out the mission of Lakeland Regional Heath's School-Based Athletic Training Program, which is to support the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries sustained by student-athletes at assigned school(s) within Polk County. The Athletic Trainer will: practice within the parameters of the Florida Athletic Training Licensing Law as laid out by the Florida Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners, follow both the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics set forth by the Athletic Training Board of Certification; and practice within the scope of their licensure in accordance with the approved policies, procedures, and protocols set forth by the Program Administrator, Medical Director(s), Supervising Physician(s), School Athletic Director(s), and the Outpatient Rehab Operations Manager / Director. The Athletic Trainer's duties are based on the needs of the assigned school(s) and athletic programs, as well as identified programmatic needs established by Program Administration. The Athletic Trainer contributes to positive outcomes and meets the cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior. He/she shares responsibility for all aspects of the athletic training functions at assigned school(s).

Position Responsibilities

Standard Work: Certified Athletic Trainer-School-Based

  • Provides comprehensive prevention, care, and rehabilitation services to high school athletes during practice and competition coverage for select sports.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and communication mechanisms with designated school athletic director(s), school nurse, team, and community sports medicine and orthopedic physicians, physical and occupational therapists, parents, school representatives, and the larger Lakeland community.
  • Works collaboratively with team and community physicians, physician extenders, and the rehabilitation team to promote timely access to medical and physical rehabilitation services and rapid safe return to sport.
  • Coordinates with school athletic director(s) in the establishment of comprehensive venue and condition specific emergency action plans (EAP's) and participates in the annual review of the EAP's with the school athletic director and coaching staff.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and flexibility to meet athlete, school and programmatic needs so that positive outcomes are achieved while maintain a high degree of productivity and efficiency.
  • Develops a collaborative working relationship with the LRH sports medicine and orthopedic physicians by assisting in the clinical capacity as directed by the Outpatient Rehab Operations Manager / Director, participation in Lakeland community events in conjunction with the LRH sports medicine and orthopedic physicians, as well as coordination and working with the physicians during school visits and game coverage each season.
  • Establishes clinical hours at the assigned school(s), designs, and implements specified interventions for injured athletes under the direction of a designated physician.
  • Completes and maintains all athlete-related documentation, as well as established injury and referral tracking logs as directed by the Outpatient Rehab Operations Manager / Director.
  • Knows and adheres to all organizational and department policies and procedures, as well as those of the assigned school(s).
  • Utilizes measures to promote and maintain athlete safety, including appropriate use of infection control principles and personal protection equipment

Competencies & Skills

Essential:

  • Possesses knowledge about a large range of medical problems and associated assessment and evaluation techniques.
  • Demonstration of effective problem solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and team work skills.
  • Able to critically think and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Uses effective verbal and written communication skills; Able to effectively communicate in high stress / pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.
  • Demonstrates good attention to detail and ability to complete and maintain thorough detailed injury tracking and documentation.
  • Demonstrates good time management and organization skills; Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel between school(s), sport event locations, and LRH facilities.
  • Willingness to demonstrate flexibility for coverage of post-season competition coverage as agreed upon by the school athletic director and the Outpatient Rehab Operations Manager / Director.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor Degree

Nonessential:

  • Master Degree

Essential:

  • Successful completion of mandatory requirements, including Department proficiencies/competencies.

Other information:

Experience Essential:

- Experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer (or Student Athletic Trainer) in a school-based athletic training setting.

- Essential computer skills and knowledge of electronic medical records recommended.

- Successful completion of mandatory requirements, including Department proficiencies / competencies.

- Basic and continuously updated evidence-based knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, primary care medicine, preventative health maintenance, and emergency medical care.

Experience Preferred:

- One to two years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a school-based setting.

Certifications Essential:

- Certification through the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification; Certified BLS (CPR and AED)

Licenses Essential:

- Athletic Training Licensure or Eligibility for the State of Florida.
