Salary: $17.00 Hourly Location : Trumbull, CT Job Type: Full Time Job Number: 245-24 Department: Nursing Seniors/School Nurses Opening Date: 11/20/2024 Closing Date: 12/13/2024 11:59 PM Eastern DescriptionDESCRIPTION: The Certified Nursing Assistant, under the general administrative supervision of the Town of Trumbull Nursing Department, reports to the Director of Nursing and the School Nurse Coordinator for assignment and duties. In addition, the Certified Nursing Assistant is under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse(s) in the school to which they are assigned. The position will serve as an integral member of the health services team by assisting the school nurse and nursing department in the implementation of the Town of Trumbull School Health Services program and provide care and services to enhance the health of student(s) to maximize their educational opportunities. Examples of DutiesClinical Duties
- Follow OSHA/Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines when risk of exposure to Blood or other potentially infectious materials as a result of regular job duties.
- Provide first aid to students (and staff if needed) within the scope of practice and training following all appropriate State laws, Trumbull Nursing Department standing orders, and Trumbull BOE Policy.
- Measure, record, and report student vital signs to the school nurse.
- Assist with emergency care procedures under the supervision of the school nurse.
- Administer medication(s) ordered for students as needed during the school day (only if medication administration is certified and delegated by the school nurse).
- Assist nurses in monitoring the condition of students in the health office and report any changes in condition as they develop.
- May cover the health office during school nurse's lunch or brief absences such as for meetings and requests for nurse assistance outside of the health office. Reports all pertinent information regarding the health of students who may have visited the health office during the nurse's absence. Summon the nurse to return to the health office when needed for urgent/emergent situations.
- Uses good clinical & professional judgment, reports observations, and consults with the nurse at all appropriate times.
- Knowledge/ability to perform CPR/AED use in emergency situations.
- Follows all school district policies and established procedures for managing care of students and reporting of injuries and illnesses.
- Assist with acute hygiene needs/clean up of students with vomiting or bowel/bladder accidents while at school and awaiting parent pick up or return to class if possible.
- Assist school nurses in responding to all medical emergencies and other crises which may arise during the school day.
- Assist in the performance of Mandated School Health Screenings including Vision, Hearing, and Postural Screenings.
- Clinical procedure set up/clean up
Clerical Duties
- Collect, record, and report students' report of health concerns to the school nurse.
- Data entry of physicals, immunizations, screenings, conditions, and medication orders.
- Office Duties may include but not limited to answering phone calls.
- Assist with registration/processing of information for new students including the gathering of pertinent health information including records from previous schools, physicals, immunizations & medication orders.
- Attend required in-service/professional development training and monthly nursing meetings.
- Assist with collecting and tracking data as it relates to student health and wellness.
- File records, reports, and correspondence (digital and paper)
- Record and maintain information in Cumulative Health Records (digital and paper) as requested by the school nurse.
- Assist nurses in tracking health office inventory and supplies. Place orders with the Nursing Department Admin per request of the nurse.
- Assist in the preparation of screening failure notifications to parents.
- Document care in professional format using approved abbreviations, and medical terminology in the Student Information System. Complete all documentation on all direct student care provided by the end of the day, every day before leaving for the day.
- contribute data for nursing assessment to be completed such as report of student health complaints, general presentation, temperature, and other vital signs if requested.
- Other miscellaneous clerical work as needed.
- Processing letters for student referrals due to failed or missing health screenings as determined by the school nurse.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned by the school nurse, school nurse coordinator, and Director of Nursing.
- Report any issue outside of the scope of practice to the school nurse to assess and intervene as needed.
- Maintains an organized, efficient, and clean workspace.
- Carried out defined job responsibilities, delegated nursing tasks and established protocol as directed by the school nurse, substitute school nurse, School Nurse Coordinator, and Director of Nursing accepting direction and supervision from the staff nurse and nursing supervisor.
- Uses effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills.
- Conduct self in an appropriate and professional manner at all times and with all persons, including students, staff, supervisors, and parents.
- Recognizes his or her legal and clinical limitations as a health care assistant
- and functions within the boundaries of the nurse's aide role at all times.
- Contributes as a team member to support initiatives, protocols, and policies of the Town of Trumbull Nursing Department.
- Takes on other responsibilities as directed by the Director of Nursing or School Nurse Coordinator.
- Adheres to Federal privacy laws including FERPA and HIPAA for any and all information obtained as a result of working in the school and the school health office.
- Able to work with school personnel, students, parents, and community members from various cultural backgrounds.

QualificationsSKILLS: Including but not limited to
- Demonstrated interest in working with children.
- Attend/complete professional development assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or School Nurse Coordinator to provide safe care and maintain current certification and knowledge necessary to perform duties.
- Competent computer skills, such as word processing, use of spreadsheets, and data input.
- Ability to learn and understand the role of a nursing assistant during health procedures of students.
- Must possess a high degree of verbal skill as well as the ability to perform mathematical computations including percentages and averages.
- Working knowledge of office and medical terminology.
- Working knowledge of basic first aid techniques including basic bandage application.
- Legible handwriting.
- Caring, concerned, and compassionate attitude.
- Ability to prepare concise oral and written reports concerning the care of students and health office activities.

- Ability to operate special medical equipment including but not limited to; blood pressure cuff, thermometer, pulse oximeter, audiometer, glucometer, continuous glucose monitor, and feeding pumps.
- Ability to understand and learn new medical terminology.
- Able to remain calm in stressful situations and crises.
- Contact parents with permission of the school nurse as needed.

- Assisting a physically impaired student to stand from sitting, pivot in place, and sit from standing; and able to transfer students with impaired mobility.
- Pushing an individual in a wheelchair (up to 200 lbs.).
- Kneeling on/off the floor to assist with injured students.
- Physical ability to administer CPR.
- Bending, stooping and lifting (up to 25lbs. alone; over 25 lbs. with assistance)
Supplemental InformationEDUCATION: High School Diploma or Associate Degree from an accredited college or university preferred. Completion of accredited approved Certified Nurse Aide training program. EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of continuous work experience involving working with children, youth, and/or adults. The work experience must have demonstrated the individual's ability to work independently with minimal supervision; to follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple reports; and to effectively communicate orally. Experience in an area related to pediatric health, child care or medical office experience or school desirable CERTIFICATION/Licensure: Must have and maintain ongoing Connecticut Nurse's Aide Certification & Licensure (active and unrestricted). Must have current certification in CPR and First Aid and maintain certification ongoing. Certification in Medication Administration a plus.
