School social workers provide educationally related clinical services including diagnosis of mental, emotional, behavioral, addictive and developmental disorders and disabilities within a school setting including identifying biological, medical, psychological, cultural, sociological, emotional, legal, economic and environmental factors that impact student learning as part of a comprehensive pupil services team. The role includes implementing appropriate school intervention and prevention programs for individuals and groups in response to demonstrated needs, which may include but are not limited to: crisis intervention, conflict resolution, violence prevention, substance abuse prevention, child abuse prevention, positive self-image of students, social skills and character education, consultation with instructional staff, administration, parents and community organizations, and individual or group counseling and parent education and training. The objectives of this position are to provide necessary clinical support and services that enhance student development and learning, through effective evaluation, counseling and consultation strategies that result in increase student mastery of age appropriate coping and regulation skills, positive self esteem, student effectiveness in problem-solving, good citizenship, and positive engagement in school and community. RESPONSIBILITIES: The following are some of the specific responsibilities of the position, but is not intended as an exhaustive list:
  • Participate in meetings of the Committee on Special Education (CSE), Committee on Preschool Special Education (COSE), and in the determination of eligibility and recommendations for services for individuals with educational disabilities;
  • Complete social history evaluations and updates as needed, and cp,[e;te the social functioning sections of each student's IEP;
  • Provide individual and/or group counseling services to students with specific school-based counseling needs to improve their educational adjustment, including working with a broad range of problems affecting students in school that stem from home, school and community factors;
  • Provide family education and training services;
  • Mobilize family, school, and community resources to support each child in their educational program;
  • Assist in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies and implement behavioral intervention programs and tiered supports for students;
  • Provide crisis intervention;
  • Develop intervention strategies to increase academic success;
  • Assist students in understand themselves, others, and respecting a diverse and inclusive school community;
  • Engage parents in support of their children's school adjustment;
  • Assist parents in accessing community resources, program and supports for students with special needs;
  • Provide direct consultation and support to staff in meeting student needs;
  • Develop and deliver staff professional development programs that support district and department objectives;
  • Complete student risk and safety assessments regarding mental health concerns and complete appropriate referrals to assure student well-being and safety;
  • Complete all required documentation, including Medicaid billing, evaluations, IEPs and social history reports;
  • Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by Administration.
APPOINTMENT: Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience, certifications, credentials and evaluation of service.
