Please contact Talent Acquisition, ...@nih.gov, if you have questions about the pay range for this position.** PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe Vaccine Clinical Materials Program (VCMP), part of Leidos Biomedical Research at the Frederick National Lab, supports the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC). Its' mission is to advance preclinical and clinical research, product development, and manufacture of novel clinical-stage vaccines and biologics to address current and/or emerging infectious diseases of global significance (e.g., HIV-AIDS, Influenza, Ebola, Malaria, Novel Coronavirus, Tuberculosis). The VCMP is responsible for the operation of a Frederick MD -based pilot plant facility and is actively engaged in cGMP manufacture, testing, release, and supply of Phase I /II clinical products for investigational use in the US and globally.KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Reporting to the cGMP Maintenance Supervisor, the Electronics Technician, will be responsible for the repair, fabrication, modification, maintenance, installation and testing of a full range of electronic pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical instruments used in research and industry.
  • Specifies and requests purchase of components.
  • Analyzes results and may develop test specifications and electrical schematics.
  • Maintains all logs and required documentation.
  • Maintains spare parts inventory.
  • May prepare technical reports with recommendations for solutions to technical problems.
  • Checking schematic diagrams and equipment manuals to isolate causes of instrument malfunctions.
  • Checking electronic alignment of instruments according to calibrating standards using electronic testing equipment.
  • Redesigning existing circuits to meet special requirements.
  • Modifying equipment for efficiency of operation.
  • Periodically inspecting instruments and support systems.
  • Conducting standard tests on newly installed support systems.
  • Assisting in maintaining reserve essential components.
  • Servicing such items as autoclaves, sterilization ovens, system controls, water filtration systems and scientific alarms.
  • Performing emergency call duty on a rotating basis (covering alarm calls after hours)
  • Administration of the Scientific Alarm System and Building Automation System.
  • Critical process equipment preventive maintenance (including clean steam generators, water for injection stills, pharmaceutical water system, sterilization autoclaves and water softeners).
  • Working independently and subject to 24-hour call for emergency repairs.
  • Assignments are reviewed for workmanship and adherence to standards.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONSTo be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a high school diploma.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of craft related experience.
  • Must possess basic Microsoft Office skills.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and blueprints; diagnose and repair malfunctions on a wide variety of electronic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical instruments; use a wide range of precision electronic testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of advanced electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical principles.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of complex electronic controls, sensory and recording systems used in research.
  • Knowledge of safety practices in the trade.
  • Ability to obtain confined space certification.
  • This position is considered a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSCandidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience working in a controlled laboratory environment, preferably GMP.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Physical requirements include the ability to maintain balance at all times, walk, kneel, hear (corrective appliance allowed), use of both hands, arms and legs, carry up to 50lb, lift >50lb, reach above shoulders, climb ladders, push/pull, repeated bending and stand for extended periods.
  • Visual acuity to include depth perception, color distinction, and vision correctable to 20/40.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to Enter a Laboratory or Encounter a Hazardous Area.
  • Pacemaker prohibited.
  • Exposure to temperatures below 32 degrees indoors for small amounts of time.
  • Exposure to temperatures above 90 degrees indoors for small amounts of time.

  • This position is subject to working in or have the potential to exposure to high noise levels for extended periods of time requiring medical clearance.
