Position Description

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) seeks to appoint a collaborative and dynamic leader, scholar, and visionary thinker as the Chair of its newly founded Department of Bioengineering. The new Chair will lead in developing and expanding the department's forward-looking vision of Innovating for Life. The Chair should have significant organizational leadership and administrative experience; demonstrated success and willingness to engage in external relations and fundraising; and credentials that merit appointment in the Department of Bioengineering at the rank of full professor.

We seek a Chair who can espouse a clear and compelling vision of how to elevate our research mission, grow our department, foster faculty advancement and leadership, and elevate our reputation nationally while making use of UC Santa Barbara's established excellence in collaborative research and shared facilities.

The new Chair should embrace and address the following opportunities and challenges:

Develop and articulate a bold and forward-looking shared vision for Bioengineering at UC Santa Barbara.

Be committed to shared governance and to the collective participation of all faculty members in decision making.

Foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community for faculty, students, and staff.

Proactively lobby for the Department of Bioengineering across all levels of the campus administration.

Provide support to ensure excellence of our faculty who work across a range of disciplines.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: At the time of application, applicants must hold a Ph.D. or the highest terminal degree in a field related to bioengineering.

Preferred Qualifications: Successful candidates will have many of the following professional qualifications, skills, experience, and personal qualities:

• A collaborative leader with demonstrated commitment to building strong relationships with graduate students, faculty, and other administrative units.
• A minimum of five years of demonstrated leadership experience.
• Excellent written, oral, interpersonal skills.
• Experience in research leadership and a strong track record in seeking extramural funds.
• A commitment to innovative and engaging graduate education.
• Demonstrated success in programs to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
• An interdisciplinary thinker, committed to building innovative research and education frameworks.
• A proven commitment to shared governance and the capacity to listen thoughtfully.
• An experienced academic leader with a track record of success in a complex research institution.
