Mandarin Chinese Court Certified/Registered Interpreters (On-Site) - Charlotte, North Carolina Global Language Strategies, an SBA certified women-owned small business, is seeking experienced Court Certified or Registered MandarinEnglish Interpreters to perform duties on-site in legal/courtroom settings, often within short notice. Minimum Qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Native proficiency in Mandarin with native-level English proficiency. 2) At least 3 years of experience interpreting in a legal setting as a court interpreter performing consecutive interpretation of courtroom/trial proceedings and other legal interpreting services as needed. 3) Provide interpretation for judges, attorneys, court staff and other court-related departments at the direction of the court. 4) Willing to accept assignments in short order during business hours from 8am to 6pm or to accommodate court hours. 5) Bachelors degree in a relevant field is required. 6) Hold an active certification or registration to interpret in the state of North Carolina7) Must currently reside in the Charlotte, NC AREA8) Professional demeanor and decorum is required. 9) Possess the stamina to sit and/or stand and concentrate for extended periods and have (corrected) hearing and vision to normal range. 10) Ability to adjust to speakers with differing voices and accents at varying rates of speed. Essential Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Performs consecutive interpretation from English to/from Mandarin at court proceedings and for other court-related activities at the direction of the court. 2) Performs document reviews (sight translations of Mandarin documents) for the benefit of the court, including but not limited to, court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents. 3) Notifies the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreters' performance. 4) Researches and understands terminology used in legal settings as well as the functions of the court, which may include legal, technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology, etc. 5) Performs other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing general court information at an information counter to Limited English proficiency (LEP) individuals and processes documents related to the interpretation assignment. Additional Requirements and Desired Qualifications: 1) Accurately render interpretation between English and Mandarin languages, meaning the interpreted content must be conveyed accurately without alterations or omissions. 2) Remain impartial during interpretation, including during adversarial or emotionally charged situations that may arise during court or other proceedings. 3) Knowledge and understanding of legal concepts and forensic terminology in both English and Mandarin. 4) Ability to use office equipment, including computers, telephones, and copiers, as required by the assignment. This includes use of a transmitter/receiver provided by the court for any simultaneous interpretation. 5) Ability to understand and adhere to the North Carolina statutes, rules of court and applicable personnel rules concerning court interpretation. 6) Ability to interact professionally and cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work. 7) Possess a valid driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Working Conditions: Work is performed in the courtroom and related court facilities and includes, but is not limited to, contact with judges, staff attorneys, and the public. The position requires the ability to concentrate and deliver interpreting services in a busy and fast-paced environment. Courtroom interpreting requires the ability to adjust to speakers with differing voices and accents at varying rates of speed. Interpreters come into contact with a wide variety of people from differing educational and economic backgrounds. Travel within the county is required. Travel between counties is required if the interpreter accepts cross assignments.
