Chemical Operator

Summary
Operates various polymer equipment as assigned by the Shift Supervisor and the manner outlined in the production procedures for the purpose of producing intermediate and finished products. This role reports to the Shift Supervisor.
Responsibilities
Operations
- Charges reaction vessels according to established procedures and techniques
- Monitors computer displays, process control charts, reacts to process alarms and adverse conditions
- Transfers finished product from polymerization vessels to storage tanks, drums, intermediate tanks, or filtration tanks
- Completes work-related tasks as assigned by the Shift Supervisor
- Logs and does “first line” diagnosis of computer or field problems. Reports these to supervisor
- Monitors the polymerization reactions following the direction of the Shift Supervisor and/or established procedures and techniques
- Charges solution tanks as needed
- Assists in the loading and unloading of products when necessary
- Performs simple plant maintenance
- Readies vessels for entry by cabinet defusing and/or other tasks as directed by supervisor. Responsible for check out of vessels after entry complete, including cabinet fusing and vessel pressure testing at the direction of the Shift Supervisor
- Writes maintenance work orders
Equipment Cleaning
- Maintains the NLB water blasting system in good working condition as outlined in the system maintenance manual. Perform minor maintenance as necessary
- Cleans reactors, strippers, and cook tanks per schedule
- Reports all needed equipment and replacement parts to Shift Supervisor
- Responsible for putting reactor in position to clean; i.e., open manway and remove bottom valve
- Responsible for putting vessel back in service to pressure test
Safety
- Follows plant safety rules and regulations
- Participates in monthly departmental safety inspection when requested by supervisor
- Uses personal protection equipment (PPE) properly and appropriately
- Actively participates in weekly and monthly departmental safety meetings
- Reports unsafe acts, conditions, or health concerns to the respective supervisor
- Maintains work area in a neat clean condition
- Disposes of any chemical in a properly approved environmentally sound method
- Reports any spills or environmental incidents to supervisor
- Assists in the completion of scheduled Compliance Audits when requested
Skills/Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- General understanding of chemistry and chemical reactions
- 1+ years of work experience in Chemical Batch Operations
- Operation of a forklift
- Good communication skills, both written and oral
- Proficient at Math
- Able to operate a computer and various software programs
- Team player
- Ability to complete additional training as required.
