Job Description:
The Chief Accounting Officer (SafePort) will have extensive experience in insurance company financial accounting, reporting, and compliance including the responsibilities associated with other financial statutory filings. This position offers an experienced executive the opportunity to utilize their insurance expertise as Chief Accounting Officer and manage SafePort's finance team.Essential Functions
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly statutory and GAAP financial statements
  • Ensure the proper preparation and filing of Quarterly and Annual Statements for SafePort by the required due dates
  • Review and draft responses to inquiries received from the Florida and New York insurance regulators relating to financial matters
  • Manage state regulatory filings, including premium tax returns and financial data calls
  • Lead preparation of financial results analyses, operating budgets and financial projections
  • Oversee the research and documentation of statutory and GAAP corporate accounting policies, complex or unusual transactions, and corporate finance policies
  • Manage the day-to-day financial activities of the SafePort Finance team
  • Ensure adherence to established financial controls and procedures and also recommend and implement improvements in response to changing business conditions
  • Review financial provisions in operating and reinsurance contracts for appropriate content, economics, and clarity of terms
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a valuable partner and resource for executive leadership in achieving financial goals
  • Along with the CFO and Controller, lead contacts with actuaries, auditors, tax accountants, and SageSure staff
  • May perform other related duties and special projects as assigned or requested
Minimum Requirements Education, training, and experience:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting or business-related field and/or equivalent combination of High School Diploma/GED, training and work experience
  • CPA
  • At least 10 years of experience as a Controller/Treasurer (or comparable position) for a property and casualty insurer
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Thorough understanding of GAAP accounting and property and casualty insurance statutory accounting, including accounting for reinsurance and catastrophe bonds
  • In-depth understanding of quota share, per risk excess-of-loss, and catastrophe reinsurance
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, both independently and as part of a team
  • Detailed oriented and able to deliver work products with a high degree of accuracy
  • Strong verbal and writing skills
  • Effective prioritization and management of multiple projects
  • Available to work across time zones with flexibility to follow up on items outside of business hours, including weekends
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy, able to prioritize effectively and meet strict deadlines, both independently and as part of a team
  • Works well with management and co-workers
