Job SummaryThe Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) serves as the chief operating officer and oversees all aspects of administrative and financial functions, including financial management, human resources, research administration, space planning, administrative support, IT, website management, facilities, equipment management, and the day-to-day operations of the institute.
The CAO reports directly to the CVRI Director and indirectly to the School of Medicine Vice Dean of Administration and Finance. CVRI works with investigators from various academic departments, including core faculty laboratories. CVRI also provides oversight and administrative support for the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and the Adult Pulmonary Function Lab, a clinical, diagnostics, and research lab at the Parnassus campus.
Alongside the Director, the CAO functions as a strategic planning partner, providing skillful administrative, operational, and financial management at all sites. The CAO works to maximize the utilization of all institute and program resources and to provide and maintain administrative excellence in all aspects of the institute.
The successful administrative management of existing collaborative agreements requires the ability to negotiate, problem-solve, and achieve consensus with administrators and faculty outside the Institute with whom this unit has no formal reporting relationship. These are key partnerships that the CAO must be able to shepherd through sometimes difficult administrative changes.
The CAO also manages the Smith Cardiovascular Research Building (SCVRB). The 232,000 gsf CVRB has the capacity to house 48 laboratories and a cardiology outpatient clinic.

For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
