Job Title: CHIEF CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIS Position Summary : At Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), the Chief Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will function as a leader of the Anesthesia Care Team. The qualified Chief CRNA will administer medications in accordance with Hospital policies, procedures and techniques. Document pre and post anesthesia care, as well as complete anesthesia records. Obtain appropriate consultations and diagnostic studies. Develop and implement anesthetic plan including airway management and invasive monitoring. Communicate with physicians, patients OR and PACU and ancillary personnel. Duties: Managerial Duties : Manages daily operations of the Anesthesia Department. Develops Capital and Operational Budget for approval by Dir. Peri-OP Services. Documents need for changes in staffing/budget and makes recommendations. Coordinates purchasing of supplies and equipment maximizing efficient utilization. Contributes to planning goals and objectives for the department and assists Director in coordinating activities and programs. Interviews, selects and hires qualified personnel. Counsels and evaluates personnel and terminates when necessary. Implements personnel policies. Responsible for work schedules and assignments, on-call arrangements and emergency changes in collaboration with anesthesia staff. Develops and maintains Quality Improvement programs for the Anesthesia Department in collaboration with hospital programs. Maintains compliance with regulatory and accreditation agency requirements. Represents Nurse Anesthesia at hospital conferences and committee functions and serves as an interdepartmental liaison. Follows hospital policy on security of controlled substances. Clinical Duties Chief CRNA : Provides Anesthesia care, as necessary, in accordance with CRNA Job Description and /or CRNA clinical privileges. Perform and document pre- anesthetic evaluations within hospital guidelines. Order additional testing in consult with anesthesiologist. Explain anesthesia procedures to patients/families. Apply appropriate procedures and techniques. Prepare Anesthesia plan. Prepare for the administration of anesthesia. Assemble necessary equipment and ensure its proper functioning. Obtain and prepare required medications, including proper labeling. Ensure availability of emergency/resuscitative medication. Administer anesthetic and maintain physiological status of patient. This includes proper patient positioning. Administration of general, spinal and regional anesthetics. Manage IV and IV injections. Monitor and document patients vital signs. Conduct recovery of patient from anesthesia. Reverse anesthesia consistent with standard practice. Ensure stability of patient status in PACU. Communicate status to PACU personnel. Follow up with patient during recovery phase. Monitor progress through post op period. Document all patient care interactions and other required records. Record must be complete, accurate and timely. Maintain equipment and supply inventories. Request medications and supplies as needed. Maintain and clean anesthesia equipment and workroom as needed. If available, respond to rapid response and codes. Patient Safety: Takes action to correct observed risk to patient safety Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge Qualifications Holds current active state licensure as a registered nurse in the state of N.Y., and complies with any applicable state statutory and regulatory requirements concerning advanced practice registered nursing. Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor Currently certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by this institution or state. Demonstrates current competency in the management and clinical responsibilities specified. Minimum of two years experience as a CRNA preferred Chief CRNA must be no further than one-hour travel time and maintain ability to be contacted throughout on Call shift. Must demonstrate competency in all the above duties and responsibilities. Special Notes : Resume/CV should be included with the online application.
