Position Overview: As the YMCA welcomes a new CEO, we are excited to offer a dynamic opportunity for a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to elevate and professionalize our development function and drive substantial growth. Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute comprehensive development strategies aligned with the company's mission and growth objectives.
  • Revenue Growth: Identify and secure new revenue streams through innovative business development, fundraising, and partnership initiatives.
  • Partnership Management: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including corporate partners, donors, and community leaders.
  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a high-performing development team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Market Expansion: Explore and evaluate new market opportunities, including potential mergers, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships.
  • Financial Oversight: Collaborate with the CFO to manage the development budget, ensuring alignment with financial goals and accountability.
  • Brand Enhancement: Work closely with marketing and communications teams to strengthen the company's brand and increase its visibility in the marketplace.
  • Performance Monitoring: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of development strategies and initiatives, adjusting as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Sets strategy, directs, and coordinates association capital development, annual campaign, grant, and endowment programs.
  • Serves on the CEO's Executive Leadership Team (ELT), participating in strategic decision-making and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Leads and develops a team of 2-4 development staff toward execution of a strong development plan and strategy.
  • Serves as primary staff to the Financial Development Committee and other assigned committees of the Board of Directors. Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.
  • Develops processes and actively identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gift prospects.
  • In partnership with department staff, prepares and coordinates grant proposals from government sources and private foundations.
  • Develops systems and manages resources needed for fundraising plans. Establishes and monitors the budget for the financial development department of the YMCA.
  • Develops appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the association.
  • Provides training in fundraising. Educates, motivates, and provides feedback to volunteers, key staff, and Board members related to best practices in the fundraising process.
  • Develops communication plans to ensure members, participants, and the community understand the case for support.
  • Represents the association as required by the President.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and focus.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent; Master's degree preferred.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience with a fundraising background in the YMCA or another non-profit preferred, with at least two years in a leadership role.
  • Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Strong working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
  • Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.
  • Strong experience developing institutional funding partnerships, including with philanthropic organizations and government/public grantors.
  • CFRE or equivalent preferred; YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
