POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting directly to the President and CEO and a member of senior management, the new Chief Development Officer will provide leadership for a comprehensive resource development program.

Two years ago, in 2012, PPLM completed a successful five year $30,000,000 comprehensive campaign, the largest comprehensive campaign in PPLM's history. There were six and seven figure gifts and an expansion of the donor base. The campaign benefited from increased giving levels from long-time major donors and the addition of a number of new major donors.

Working closely with volunteer and staff leadership, the CDO will be expected to guide and manage the expansion of a complex comprehensive program, initially raising between $3 million and $4 million per year, then preparing for expanded initiatives in upcoming years, and possibly a future campaign.

Major donors are an important part of PPLM's support mix; deepening their engagement is an organizational priority. A commitment to best practices and the addition of innovative initiatives to established successful programs are expected to be important aspects of enhancing the current program. Candidates should also be aware of PPLM's effective networking, political and media savvy– organizational strengths which it puts to use in aspects of its fundraising program and which also have potential value in expanding the philanthropic base to more completely cover the entire state of Massachusetts.

The CDO will design and implement a multi-year development strategy that aligns with and supports PPLM's strategic plan and oversee the expansion of the development department, expected to grow to an eight-member team (the CDO included in that number). The CDO will maintain a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and donors and oversee the major gift program. While taking advantage of PPLM's well-developed, signature programs, the CDO will also initiate new programs and develop departmental strengths.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage and oversee all aspects of a fully integrated development program: annual giving, major gifts, institutional giving, direct mail, events, planned giving, and stewardship.
  • Identify, solicit, close and steward major gift prospects and donors in the six- and seven-figure range.
  • Hire, manage and mentor development department staff.
  • Develop and maintain donor cultivation and recognition systems according to best practice.
  • Develop new and creative ways to connect with the PPLM donor community; build and maintain relationships with key constituents, board committee members and alumni, and serve as a partner to board leadership and senior management.
  • Staff the Development Committee and provide support to other Board committees as appropriate.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as needed.
  • Participation in PPLM's efforts to achieve goals for productivity.
  • A commitment to PPLM's mission and values.
Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of successful fundraising experience with increasing responsibilities.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Proven ability to cultivate, solicit and close six-figure gifts from individuals.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of development including campaign and major gifts, annual giving, events management, online giving, planned giving, and institutional giving (including corporate and foundation grants).
  • Successful experience launching new initiatives.
  • Strategic perspective; excellent customer service approach.
  • Passion for Planned Parenthood's mission/values and ability to be a mission spokesperson.
  • Sophisticated communicator (written and verbal); polished presence with excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be a trusted partner to leadership.
