Union Rescue Mission (URM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. We are dedicated to serving men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and providing comprehensive emergency and long-term services to help them escape the dangerous streets of Skid Row. Established in 1891, URM is now one of the largest rescue missions of its kind in the United States and the oldest in Los Angeles. CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the timeliness and integrity of key financial information, including the development and maintenance of financial policies and controls, financial planning and analysis, internal and external financial reporting and compliance, company audits, and bank relationships. In collaboration with the CEO and Senior Leadership team, the CFO will make decisions regarding the organization's financial strategy and operations to safeguard Union Rescue Mission's financial health and sustainability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Participates in the Mission's strategic direction in achieving its goals for solid revenue growth and long-term organizational health.
  • Recruits, mentors, develops, and leads a high performing finance team with diverse and complimentary skills.
  • Fosters a positive culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and financial discipline within the finance department.
  • Provides strategic direction and day-to-day leadership for respective departments: Accounting and Gift Processing.
  • Leads long-term and short-term financial planning processes.
  • Ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Assists with grant applications and ensures compliance with funders' reporting requirements.
  • Oversees cash flow, cash management, working capital, and company audits.
  • Ensures the Mission has sufficient liquidity to meet its obligations.
  • Serves as a financial strategist and business advisor in consulting with other members of the leadership team in the development of key financial/business strategies and the development and implementation of organizational performance measurements.
  • Facilitates the development of the Mission's annual budget, tracks and reports on progress throughout the year.
  • Creates and presents financial and tax strategy recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the accounting system, and development and maintenance of financial and accounting policies, as well as budgeting and other systems for internal control.
  • Plans and directs treasury activities which include the care and custody of funds and other financial assets; oversees cash management function.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Mission's independent auditors and ensures the organization complies with all federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Evaluates and ensures appropriate protocols are in place for fundraising, financing activities, and third-party vendor relations.
  • Responsible for Risk Management Programs; establishes appropriate controls to manage risk exposure and minimize potential liability; obtains and monitors appropriate and/or legally and contractually required insurance coverage for the Mission and its assets, and ensures all coverage is appropriate and in place.
  • Coordinates all legal matters, except personnel related, with legal counsel and other appropriate parties.
  • Maintains positive relationships with Board Members, suppliers, associations and government representatives, and the financial and business community.
  • Conducts other tasks and projects assigned by the CEO.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

  • Interviewing, hiring, orienting, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; coaching and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND LICENSURES:

  • Accounting/Finance degree and 10 years of progressively responsible, related financial management experience with at least 5 years of related experience in not-for-profit organizations.
  • CPA and/or MBA, preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have Financial Planning and Financial Statements expertise.
  • Ability to think strategically, synthesize the most complex business/financial data and develop innovative solutions.
  • Excellent financial analysis and forecasting skills.
  • Strong leadership and team development abilities.
  • Budgeting and forecasting proficiency.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit management, including finance, and administration.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and tax issues for nonprofit organizations.
  • Experienced in integrated accounting systems (Abila MIP Fund Accounting), CRMs (Salesforce), and other financial and operational systems.
  • Excellent PC skills particularly Excel and Word.
  • Excellent planning, organizing, and project management skills.
  • Strong customer service quality and results orientation.
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Experience managing multiple locations.
  • Excellent executive presentation skills.
  • Ability to facilitate progressive change.
