Job Description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) oversees the financial operations of the organization, ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, effective budgeting, and strategic financial planning. Maintaining the highest standards of internal controls and accounting systems, the CFO will ensure that the organization has policies and procedures that align with the Financial Accounting Standards Board's (FASB) Accounting Standards. The CFO is a direct report to the Chief Executive Officer and staff liaison to the Board's Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees. The CFO plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of Communities In Schools of San Antonio by providing financial leadership and strategic guidance.

Primary Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Financial Leadership & Management

  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support organizational goals and ensure financial stability of the agency.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, coordinating with department heads to align budgets with strategic priorities.
  • Monitor financial performance against the budget and provide regular updates to management.
  • Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets, contracts, and billing.
  • Monitor cash flow and ensure availability of funds as needed.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards, including IRS requirements for nonprofit organizations.
  • Manage the organization's financial risk, including insurance and internal controls.
  • Coordinate all audit activity including the annual financial audit, retirement audit and monitoring by funders.

Financial Analysis & Strategic Planning

  • Analyze financial data both internal and external to inform strategic decisions and identify opportunities for growth and efficiency.
  • Monitor and make informed recommendations for short-term and long-term investments.
  • Collaborate with CEO and the Executive Team to develop and implement the organization's strategic plan.

Executive Leadership & Management

  • Manage the accounting team.
  • Provide coaching, professional development and performance management for assigned departments.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies to ensure the effective flow of critical information, while clearly communicating supervisor expectations that align with departmental and agency policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate and document performance issues as needed in conjunction with the agency's Progressive Discipline Process.
  • Support the recruitment, interviewing, selection, and placement of well-qualified staff.
  • Gather staff input to enhance communication and promote an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Provide strategic leadership and financial expertise to the Executive Team that is aligned to organizational goals and promotes effective decision-making.

Administrative & Other Duties

  • Attend meetings and professional development to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in leadership activities, trainings, and events.
  • Ensure the completion of required reports.
  • Plan and make appropriate expenditures and maintain budgets.
  • Manage timecards.

Required Education, Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience in accounting and financial management, 3 years at an upper management or executive level position.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership skills with a commitment to mentoring and developing team members.
  • Experience with financial software and tools (MIP experience preferred).
  • Strong administrative and proficient technology/computer skills to include word processing, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail, internet, and accounting software.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management and people skills.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills
  • Excellent communication and data presentation skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Proof of producing clean audits in prior accounting positions
  • Proven record in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis

  • Maintain confidentiality and professional and ethical behavior in all interactions.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
