Job Description:
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), VCU Medical Center (VCUMC) reports directly to the President, VCU Medical Center and, is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all aspects related to direct patient care/nursing activities including but not limited to the following: safety, service, clinical excellence, nursing practice, and nursing education and development of the VCU Medical Center. The CNO works in partnership with affiliate hospitals to ensure that excellence in clinical care, education, research and community outreach is promoted and achieved across the health system, and nursing practice remains within the boundaries of the governing regulations in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The CNO will also ensure practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards, as well as VCU Health System policies and procedures. The Chief Nursing Officer, VCU Medical Center has the responsibility to ensure that patient care services primarily related to nursing delivered at the Medical Center are focused on enhancing the patient experience. This executive finds a balance in managing the day-to-day operations while leading strategic development initiatives required for the hospital's long-term success by creating an environment of collaboration and engaged providers. Additionally, effectively manages the financial forecast for Nursing at the Medical Center while being a responsible steward of resources in alignment with the VCU Health System financial goals. This executive partners and collaborates with the Vice President of Ambulatory Services, the Vice President of Perioperative Surgical Services, and other Medical Center and VCU Health System leaders in the strategic development and operational execution of clinical services excellence and human capital strategy, to safeguard the position of VCU Medical Center and VCUHS as a regional leading provider of clinical services. The CNO VCUMC interfaces effectively with VCU partners as needed to ensure safe, timely, and efficient care of patients across the care continuum. In addition, this individual fosters a collaborative relationship with VCU School of Nursing to support the educational mission of the health system and a pipeline for growth of VCUHS nursing services.Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Current Registered Nurse licensure in Virginia or eligible. AHA BLS Certification or equivalent. Specialty certification in Executive Nursing Practice or Healthcare Administration preferred. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment including CPR, etc.: Current Registered Nurse Licensure in Virginia. Specialty certification in Executive Nursing Practice or Healthcare Administration preferred. Level and type of experience REQUIRED :Minimum ten (10) years supervisory / management experience in nursing operations at a large and complex academic hospital OR a combination of large and complex academic hospital AND large highly matrixed hospital.Experience at senior/executive level in hospital management.Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in hospital nursing operations.Proven financial skills including reimbursement, managed care and financial accountability.Proven ability to recruit, train and motivate clinical and non-clinical personnel in order to balance staffing strength with profitability and growth. Commitment to a participation management style and to a team-oriented model of care.Demonstrated ability to lead and effect change, including skills in continuous quality improvement and promoting ongoing professional development. Knowledge of the High Reliability Organizations core concepts and fundamentals.Level and type of experience PREFERRED:Knowledge and implementation of value based models.Twelve (12) years of progressively more responsible supervisory / management experience in hospital setting.Experience at senior/executive level in urban hospital management.Education/training REQUIRED:Bachelor's degree in Nursing.Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Public Health Administration, or related field.Education/training PREFERRED:Doctorate degreeDescribe supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): Direct reports include clinical and non-clinical directors, managers and team members at the VCU Medical Center.Additional position requirements such as shift rotations, weekends, environment, etc. :Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as role necessitates.
