Job Description: SUNY Maritime College is served by the New York State University Police Department, whose mission is to protect life and property, as well as to understand and serve the broader security needs of the campus community. By performing these tasks in a way that is wholly consistent with the College's formal mission statement, our police act as an integral part of the College's educational process by improving the quality of life on and around campus and by ensuring that the resolution of problems is handled in a highly professional manner. The University Police Department is a sworn law enforcement agency, and all members are armed, carry full police officer powers and are trained according to Division of Criminal Justice Services Standards. The mission of the department embraces community policing philosophies within the framework of promoting and creating a safe and supportive environment for the campus community. The objective of the University Police Department is to provide a safe environment for teaching, research, social endeavors, and to protect the lives and property of the students, employees, and visitors of the College. This objective is pursued within the framework of the State University rules and regulations and all local, state, and federal laws. The Chief of Police is responsible for the proper administration and efficient operation of university police/security forces and safety activities at the college. Supervises the maintenance of law and order on campus, the enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws, and the rules and regulations of SUNY and SUNY Maritime College. Responsibilities and Key Functions Develop appropriate preventive and security techniques to control crimes on campus Review all reports submitted by university police personnel concerning incidents and investigations on campus Acts as a liaison with Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials and agencies to ensure a mutual understanding of policies Supervises the scheduling of personnel in the university police force to ensure their efficient deployment Provide flexible, responsive, and high-quality customer service to all who are served by the police department through the continuous assessment of processes, policies, practices, and procedures Acts as a liaison with the SUNY System Administration Coordinator of University Police services in matters concerning recruitment, training, and deployment of university police personnel Submits information concerning prospective university police employees to the System Administration Coordinator of University Police/Security for an appropriate background investigation before employment Ensures that each university police employee receives basic and in-service training as required Maintains liaison with the campus Student Affairs & Regimental Affairs to ensure the accomplishment of university objectives concerning the University Police Office Administers a program of campus safety as directed by the office of the Coordinator of University Police/Security Work with Title IX Coordinator to address compliance and Title XI complaints The Chief is expected to be an effective communicator and will have overall responsibility for all emergency preparedness and emergency operational systems, procedures and policies for the campus Performs annual or as needed tabletop exercises for active shooter drills and any other necessary security exercises Annual Review of the ERP (Emergency Response Plan) Responsible for completing and submitting the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report Takes a leadership role in emergency response Serve on College-wide committees Other duties that your supervisor may assign PI190b4b41a2f7-25448-#######5
