Consider applying with us today!Department InformationDivision: Student AffairsDepartment: University PoliceJob SummaryThe Chief of Police for Columbus State University reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs. As the senior law enforcement officer for the university, the chief is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic planning, and management of the University Police Department. The department has a staff of 33 employees comprised of twenty-eight sworn officers and 5 administrative staff. The department is made up of administration, patrol, investigations, security/technology, and emergency management. The agency operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority.What is a Campus Security Authority (CSA)?The law defines a CSA as: An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings. ResponsibilitiesSignificant Duties & Responsibilities include: Establish vision and goals for the department, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and priorities (20%).; Works towards funding for objectives (10%).; Ensure required training requirements such as POST are maintained (10%).; Ensure federal reporting guidelines such as Clery are met (5%).; Maintains fiscal responsibility of annual departmental budget (20%).; Oversees personnel matters such as hiring, promoting and disciplinary action (25%).; Provides annual activity reports, monthly updates to executive leadership team (5%).; Develop and implement policy which includes formulating and prescribing work methods and procedures (5%).Required QualificationsRequired Qualifications include: A bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field.; At least 10 years of law enforcement experience with 5 or more years in a supervisory capacity at the command level.; Georgia P.O.S.T (Peace Officer Standards Training) Certification.; Must have a valid driver's license.Preferred QualificationsPreferred Qualifications include: Master's degree in criminal justice administration or public administration.; Previous experience in higher education campus law enforcement environment.; Completion of a nationally recognized program such as the National Academy (FBI), Georgia's Command College, SPI's Administrative Officer's Course, or Northwestern University School of Police and Command.Proposed SalaryThe annualized salary for this position is commensurate with education and experience and includes full benefits.Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities include: The Chief of Police should possess extensive knowledge of law enforcement policies, and accreditation standards relevant to a higher education setting.; The Chief of Police is expected to build relationships with campus community members; faculty, staff, students and senior administration and community partners.; The Chief of Police must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.; The position requires the ability to support various constituencies served by the University.; Consistently exhibit engaging customer service.; Proven proficiency with technology including Microsoft Office and/or applications required for the position.; Operate equipment such as firearms, alternative weapons, defensive tactics, cameras, vehicles, computers, etc.; Ability to solve problems and think creatively to manage tense situations courteously and tactfully.; Analyze feedback on critical incidents and make informed decisions that ensure a safe, legal, and satisfactory outcome.; Maintain confidentiality of information and protocols.; Conduct research via the internet and access data in the police records management system and Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) database.; Knowledge of Georgia Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center facilities and services.; Knowledge and/or experience with the State Certification process and procedures.; Knowledgeable about Georgia law and office policies and procedures.; Knowledge of Clery Act and Title IX requirements.; Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills.; Demonstrate proficiency in modern law enforcement technology, including body cameras, surveillance systems, and data management software.; Energy and enthusiasm for the role, the university, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity.; Character, integrity, ethics, and an ethos of servant leadership.Contact InformationIf you have any questions, please contact Human Resources via email at ...@columbusstate.eduUSG Core ValuesThe University System of Georgia is comprised of our 26 institutions of higher education and learning as well as the System Office.
