Position Overview

The Chief of Public Policy will spearhead the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce's comprehensive public policy and advocacy efforts. As a key member of the Chamber's executive team, this role requires a deep understanding of public policy, government relations, and strong advocacy skills. The Chief of Public Policy will be responsible for shaping and driving the Chamber's strategic plan related to advocacy, ensuring active engagement and mobilization of Chamber members across all levels of government.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership: Lead the development and execution of the Chamber's advocacy agenda, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

• Government Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with key policymakers, government officials, and regulatory bodies to influence legislation and policies that benefit the Chamber's membership.

• Legislative Advocacy: Lead efforts to mobilize Chamber members in support of or opposition to critical legislation. This includes developing advocacy campaigns, coordinating member participation, providing testimony and legislative updates.

• Regulatory Monitoring: Oversee the monitoring and analysis of activities from regulatory agencies to anticipate and address potential impacts on Chamber members and the broader business community.

• Executive Collaboration: Work closely with the Chamber's executive team to ensure that advocacy efforts are aligned with other strategic initiatives across the organization, including programs and events, and marketing and communications.

• Policy Development: Collaborate with industry leaders, member organizations, and subject matter experts to develop policy positions that advance the interests of the business community. Oversee the policy committee structure and leverage the expertise of members of the Board.

• Public Affairs: Serve as a key spokesperson for the Chamber on policy issues, representing the organization in Board meetings, public forums, and media engagements. Oversee the work of external consultants.

Management and Supervisory Skills

• Team Leadership: Oversee the Public Policy department, managing and mentoring a team of policy professionals. Ensure the team is aligned with the Chamber's mission and advocacy goals.

• Staff Development: Provide coaching, training, and professional development opportunities for team members to build expertise in policy areas, advocacy strategies, and government relations.

• Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with other department heads, ensuring cohesive internal communication and coordination on cross-functional projects, particularly those involving communications, events, and member engagement.

• Resource Allocation: Manage the department's budget and resources effectively to support advocacy efforts, campaigns, and policy research.

The Chief of Public Policy will play a pivotal role in shaping the Chamber's advocacy direction and ensuring that the organization's policy efforts positively impact the region's economic and regulatory environment. This role combines high-level policy expertise with strong leadership and management skills to ensure the team's success in advancing the Chamber's mission.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; post-graduate degree preferred

• Senior executive experience with a minimum of five years' experience in public policy, government affairs or related field

• Strong understanding of Los Angeles and California public policy landscape

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Experience drafting testimony, position statements, letters, and executive presentations

• Experience supervising staff, managing competing priorities, and collaborating with multiple stakeholders

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Compensation

Base Salary: $215,000 plus bonus opportunity
