Job Description:
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Deputy Chancellor of Inclusive and Accessible Education, with wide latitude to exercise independent judgment and initiative, the Chief of Staff (COS) will oversee day-to-day activities both for the Deputy Chancellor and the Division (DIAL), work in varying degrees of autonomy and collaboration on special projects, and prepare the Deputy Chancellor for external matters and decision-making processes, including written communications, public inquiries, internal and external talking points, and press statements. The Chief of Staff will work closely with all levels of the Division s office staff in supporting short- and long-term projects, interdivisional alignment and coordination, management of divisional priorities, internal and external communications, public appearances, and speaking engagements. This position works closely with DIAL chiefs and other senior leaders to shape the direction of programs in NYC Public Schools (NYCPS), leading cross-functional teams, building relationships with key stakeholders, and providing critical support to ensure that our programs are effectively serving our students and families. Key Relationships: Provides counsel and assistance to the Deputy Chancellor; liaises with the Chiefs of Special Education and Multilingual Learners, District 75 Superintendent, and Committees on Special Education; serves as a member of the Deputy Chancellor s cabinet; and works closely with other DIAL Chiefs of Staff to ensure collaboration and coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the Deputy Chancellor s office, including meetings, preparation of materials, and other related administrative matters.
  • Creatively problem solves and leads cross-functional teams.
  • Develops and executes organizational strategies.
  • Collaborates and builds consensus with a diverse range of stakeholders to ensure our policies and programs are effectively serving our students.
  • Develops and manages multiple project plans and meets critical deadlines related to Divisional goals.
  • Vets all major communications, policies, proposals, and memos for the Deputy Chancellor.
  • Leads critical strategic educational initiatives assigned by the Deputy Chancellor and manages special functions and activities.
  • Develops presentations, talking points, and recommendation memos for the Deputy Chancellor to present to the Chancellor and other stakeholders.
  • Manages offices within the Division to provide high-level communications and external affairs support, prepares written statements and communications; ensures teams respond to public inquiries in collaboration with the Press Office team, and develops internal and external speaking points.
  • Develops and builds staff capacity to use effective strategies for gathering educators feedback on accountability tools and achievement resources.
  • Works with the Chiefs of Special Education and Multilingual Learners, the District 75 Superintendent, and the Senior Executive Director for CSEs to ensure support of prioritized educational projects and workstreams, including work pertaining to strategic planning and project management.
  • Facilitates alignment across DIAL, including across functions such as policy, communications, professional learning, program planning, data, and strategy.
  • Organizes and leads divisional leadership meetings and events.
  • Represents the Deputy Chancellor in internal and external relations, including serving as a liaison with high-level officials of government agencies, community organizations, and private foundations; develops presentations for key decision-makers and stakeholders, in collaboration with content-owners across the division.
  • Manages and coordinates the timely flow of information and communication to key constituencies, cultivating an effective and productive customer service-oriented environment; manages the process for developing implementation and communication plans.
  • Develops and implements systems and structures for divisional management, communication, and coordination.
  • Monitors the implementation of high-priority educational projects on behalf of the Deputy Chancellor; provides key updates to the Chiefs, D75 Superintendent, and Senior Executive Directors, pushing in with staff as needed.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

  • Bachelor s degree from an accredited college and 4 years of satisfactory experience of a nature to qualify for the duties and responsibilities of the position, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, consultative or executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position; or
  • A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to 1 above. However, all candidates must have the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive, consultative or supervisory experience described in 1 above.

Preferred

  • Experience managing and implementing complex projects, collaborating with diverse stakeholders, and developing and executing organizational strategies
  • Deep understanding of the education landscape and a passion for creating positive change in the lives of our students.
  • Dynamic leader with a proven track record of success.
  • Comfortable in both independent and team environments.
  • Developed public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Clear communicator who can make easy to understand presentations to a variety of constituencies internal and external to the NYCPS.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with education and non-education personnel, internal and external to the NYCPS.
  • Ability to think strategically and translate insights into action; project management experience.
  • Strong critical thinking and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to mobilize disparate groups of people toward goals.
  • Attentive to detail; extremely well organized.
  • Able to work under pressure and meet frequent and changing deadlines.
  • Skilled with group problem-solving and working with complex concepts in a dynamic setting.
  • Ability to organize facts and present information and figures in a clear, concise, and logical manner, in both spoken and written form.
  • Creative problem-solver with the ability to perform independent, thoughtful analysis around important educational issues.

Salary: $147,283 $152,000

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
