Saint Johns Program for Real Change mission is to provide a safe space for women and children to heal and develop the skills necessary to transform their lives. We accomplish our mission by holding to our vision to end the generational cycle of trauma and homelessness.

We operate the largest residential program for formerly homeless women and children in the Sacramento region providing services 24 hours/day, 365 days/year, offering shelter, meals, childcare, and comprehensive support services, including Behavioral Health Services, Hands-on Employment Training, Career Education, and Family Services.

TITLE Chief Operations Officer

SALARY From $130,000 To $155,000 Annually

CLASSIFICATION Full-Time, Exempt

LOCATION On Site Only Jackson Rd. Sacramento, CA

SCHEDULE Monday- Friday

About the Position

The COO will be a steward of the culture and lead all internal operations, spearhead the development of the social enterprise Red Door Desserts, and support the brand and vision efforts of Saint Johns Program for Real Change.

You will be responsible for

  • Working in partnership with the CEO to create the strategic plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it.
  • Serve as the internal leader of the organization.
  • Coordinate the annual operations plan and budget.
  • Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization.
  • Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence; and have an open-door policy among all staff.
  • Lead and manage the organization's senior leadership, who have the following responsibilities:
  • Organizational wide operations among two large residential buildings, on-site modular housing (Saint Johns Square) and an offsite residential facility.
  • Oversee the data and outcomes of the residential and employment program.
  • Identify and improve key impact measurements through robust data collection, management and comparison.
  • Oversee programmatic partners and all contracts.
  • Support curriculum development, tools, and training.
  • Business Development.
  • Benchmark current practices (production, marketing, QA and operations) and ROI of the employment training programs: Plates Catering and Red Door Desserts.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term growth plans for Red Door Desserts, the on-site employment training program and social enterprise.
  • Set KPIs and milestones for the social enterprise in order to build an additional key revenue source for Saint Johns.
  • Develop, implement and oversee all marketing and PR efforts.
  • Finance, Technology, Human Resources and Culture.
  • Produce and implement an operational dashboard metric throughout the organization.
  • Cultivate the values of Saint Johns within the organization.
  • Instill a human capital development and coaching culture within Saint Johns; including: training, development, compensation and benefits tied to performance, employee relations.
  • Oversee the accounting in order to deliver financial information and enables strategic budgeting.
  • Analyze the current technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of information technology and financial systems that support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall.
  • Fund Raising function reports to CEO with a dotted-line reporting to COO on:
  • Budgeting.
  • Development and implementation of systems for reporting, measurement and supporting local revenue generation.
  • Administrative aspects including proposal preparation and granting writing.
  • Execution and evaluation of PR and marketing efforts.

You must have...

As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of Saint Johns Program for Real Change and be driven by the mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate that has a demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, bright, diverse team and proven experience in scaling an organization or mission.

The successful candidate will most likely have had management experience. As noted, this is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a values-driven organization will be highly prized. Additional requirements are:

  • Results-proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen including successful P&L management; the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.
  • Strategic Vision and Agility-ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
  • Capacity Building-ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, developing a top-notch workforce and the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly.
  • Leadership and Organization-exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed.
  • Action Oriented-enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary.
  • General Management-thorough understanding of PR/marketing, finance, organizational policies/processes; broad experience in strategic development and planning, budgeting and business analysis.
  • Solid educational background-undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree highly desired.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical requirements for performing the essential functions of this position require the employee to be able to:

  • Standing/walking approximately 20% and sitting 80% of the time.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear and respond to simple and sometimes critical messages exchanged in noisy/high traffic areas.
