Reporting to the Director and/or Site Supervisor, the Child Development and Education Center Associate Teacher assists in providing instruction and care for children in activities designed to promote optimal emotional, social, physical, intellectual and creative development. Positions in this class are distinguished by the incumbent's responsibilities that center on early childhood education and care. The work requires a knowledge of the functions and structure of the Child Development and Education Center. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Assist:
    • the Master Teacher in planning, supervising and implementing a specific age group program in accordance with center policies and philosophy
    • the Master Teacher in providing an integrated curriculum that meets the developmental needs of individual children
    • children in self-help and social skills
    • in maintaining daily records with regards to attendance, health and nutrition
    • in assessing children's needs and developmental progress on an ongoing basis and apply this assessment to plan activities
    • in providing a climate of respect for each child's individual personality, physical characteristics and traits, culture, language and ethnic characteristics, family structure, developmental needs and behavior
    • in mealtime and snack preparation including serving and cutting food into bite-size pieces for young children and help with cleanup
  • Participate in ongoing professional development including coursework, regular staff meetings and parent meetings
  • Act as a role model for students, parents and center visitors and assist in facilitating positive and productive relationships with families that support the development of children
  • Utilize and promote positive guidance techniques
  • Perform housekeeping tasks and maintain a safe, clean, orderly and attractive learning environment for children
  • Maintain classroom supplies, materials and equipment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESThe incumbent must possess thorough knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of a child development center
  • The principles of child development
  • Appropriate activities for children of various ages and skill levels, especially for preschool, infant and toddler age
The incumbent must possess the skills to:

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid Child Development Permit at the Associate Teacher level or higher (*attach permit); AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
