Child Nutrition Specialist

Full time, Permanent, 12 month position

Required Qualifications:

* Bachelors of Science in food service management, nutrition or a related field.

* Registered Dietitian or RD eligible

* School Nutrition Specialist or SNS completion within one year

* Minimum of one (1) year of experience in dietetics and/or food service management position.

* ServSafe certified.

* Must have knowledge of the USDA Child Nutrition Program.

* Knowledgeable in applying dietary restrictions for students requiring special diets.

General Description:

The Child Nutrition Specialist in reporting to the Supervisor of Child Nutrition is a Registered Dietitian who plays a crucial role in promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of students by overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition programs within the school district. This position involves collaboration with cafeteria staff, school administrators, and various stakeholders to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing child nutrition services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Duties

* Develops age appropriate monthly menus for all student feeding programs and special allergy menus which meet USDA regulation and complete menu analysis.

* Manages all student food allergies and dietary requests, including meeting with building level nurses, speech pathologists, parents, students and nutrition services staff as needed regarding student dietary restrictions.

* Prepares a comprehensive carbohydrate report for school nurses.

* Responsible for updating and maintaining allergen information in software programs and other appropriate files as required.

* Reviews all ingredients on food labels to ensure students are provided safe foods that meet his/her special dietary needs.

* Trains nutrition services staff on proper protocol for preparing and serving special diets to students with food allergies/diet restrictions.

* Evaluates the quality of new and currently utilized products to determine acceptability for allergy students.

* Collects and maintains food labels of all products purchased in an organized manner as per USDA regulations.

* Responsible for evaluating portion sizes to ensure portions served align with USDA regulations and communicates any serving size changes.

* Updates healthy snack guidance for schools and parents.

* Responsible for development of and standardization of all recipes. Maintains up-to-date recipe file in district software program.

* Coordinates USDA commodity orders and monitors allocations and inventory to maximize usage of district allocated USDA commodities.

* Maintains and updates the Nutrition Services website as needed.

* Develop and maintain a marketing system for the nutrition program, fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.

* Reviews and creates menu cost analysis. Monitors and updates food cost in inventory software with other specialists.

* Coordinates Farm to School and school garden activities with other office specialists and school managers.

* Develops nutrition education materials with instruction staff, as requested or needed.

* Works collaboratively with office specialists and managers to plan and provide in-service education and training for staff members.

* Prepares and/or participates in department presentations.

* Participates in the District Wellness Committee and triennial assessment.

* Provides direction and technical support for Point of Sale, inventory and production software.

* Performs other duties as assigned.
