Salary: $18.50 - $21.00 HourlyLocation : Great Falls MT 59404, MTJob Type: Temporary Full-timeJob Number: 24-00137Department: Public WorksDivision: EngineeringOpening Date: 12/16/2024Closing Date: ContinuousUnion Classification: Non-UnionNature of WorkThe Student Civil Engineer will be responsible for assisting Civil Engineers, Civil Engineering Inspectors, and Draftsman on various City infrastructure and Development projects and spending time in the field with inspectors to get a better understanding of how projects are built. The work is performed under the direction of the City Engineer. Essential Functions of WorkProject Management (60%)
  • Organize and maintain project files and databases.
  • Support the preparation of reports, calculation packages, and technical specifications.
  • Depending on experience, contribute to designing plans for a variety of projects, such as public capital improvement initiatives, commercial developments, and residential subdivisions.
  • Assist Engineers in the design and compiling of contract documents and prepare them for bidding.
  • Review plans for compliance with City Standards.
Drafting and Surveying (20%)
  • Use Civil3D for drafting markups to project plan sheets and updating redlines on engineering documents.
  • Serve as a field crew member to provide survey support, including measure ups, and field drawings.
  • Update asset information in our electronic software Cartegraph.
Construction Inspection (20%)
  • Assist Inspectors with construction observation and conduct infrastructure testing for water and sewer systems.
  • Assist Inspectors in preparing quantity measurements for cost projections and pay applications.
Education and Experience
  • High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering or related field.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid Montana driver's license.
  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil3D a plus.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITYThis position does not supervise staff.WORK ENVIRONMENTEmployee is expected to perform work in both field and office settings. Employee will work in outside weather conditions exposed to cold, heat, noise, dust, confining workspace and mechanical hazards.PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, crawl, climb, kneel, ride, grasp, push, pull and perform similar body movements; must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and to lift and carry up to 75 pounds at a time; possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to use a personal computer,survey instruments and hand tools and to operate a motor vehicle; ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read and understand contract documents, instructions, blueprints and inspect facilities.EXPECTED HOURS OF WORKThe work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. This short-term position is non-exempt and is eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.TRAVELTravel is primarily local during the business day.
