Job Description This is the intermediate level of the claim handler career path. Exercise progressively more discretion in providing prompt, cost effective and efficient examination, investigation and settlement of 1st party commercial property insurance claims for excess and surplus lines and admitted policies. Provide informed coverage analysis and settle claims within authority. RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:
  • Evaluate commercial property claim coverage and determine the scope of damages.
  • Adjust a caseload of assigned files in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Conduct prompt, thorough, and fair investigations by obtaining relevant facts and expert input (as appropriate) to determine cause and extent of damages.
  • Assign, direct, and handle property losses through the use Independent Adjusters and other experts and vendors as appropriate
  • Maintain an active diary on caseload. Each file requires a plan of action.
  • Adhere to assigned authority limits for reserving and payments (including settlements).
  • The associate will be technically proficient in all aspects of claim handling, having gained the necessary knowledge and expertise in claim procedures, coverage, terminology, etc. from previous experience.
  • Proficient in writing position letters (Reservation of Rights and Declination, detailed settlement letter)
  • Knowledge of local codes, laws, standards and case-law.
  • Provide timely customer service.
  • Responsible for identifying and thoroughly investigating all possible recovery and subrogation opportunities revealed in the claims. If the possibility for recovery or subrogation exists, the associate takes the necessary steps for recovery.
  • Assure that the claims are handled effectively and cost efficiently
  • Determine scope of damages through the use of Xactimmate and/or vendor and IA estimates.
  • Utilize experts such as structural engineers, building consultants, cause and origin investigators and other specialized vendors as deemed appropriate to move the claim toward resolution.
  • Establish and maintain through effective communication, positive working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Assist in mentoring team members.
This position description identifies the responsibilities and tasks typically associated with the performance of the position. Other relevant essential functions may be required. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in a related field. Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Continuous learning, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy, is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged. EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience in a commercial property claims environment which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities, such as experience in reviewing, investigating and closing workers' compensation claims. Experience handling claims in multiple jurisdictions preferred. Bilingual skills preferred. OR One year of AF Group Claims Representative I experience that includes handling of difficult or complex claims. SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is mostly performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Minimal travel is required. Must be able to drive an automobile and have valid operator license. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Pay Range - Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate's skills and professional experience, geographic location, market, and other potential factors.
