Establishing a hiring pool primarily for cleaner positions, but may also be used in grounds and miscellaneous labor positions. Positions could be temporary or permanent, depending on the operational need. Cleaner performs a variety of routine manual tasks requiring light, medium, and heavy physical effort in cleaning and caring for an assigned area in residence hall and/or academic buildings and adjacent grounds and sidewalks on the SUNY Cortland campus.

Salary is $15.95 Hourly = $33,313 Annual

Major Responsibilities

* Perform a variety of routine manual work under supervision.

* Pick up and remove hazardous articles which may be on floors, furniture, and equipment and places them in designated receptacles or in appropriate places.

* Move furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning and care functions.

* Use mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning implements washes floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls, partitions, windows from the inside of buildings, etc.

* Change curtains, drapes, hangs pictures and other decorative objects.

* Using manual and/or mechanical equipment, strips, vacuums and waxes floors and shampoos carpets.

* Use hand-operated equipment and detergents to scrub and clean all areas of lavatories, such as sinks, urinals, toilets, etc.

* Use hand-dusting equipment and dusts assigned areas.

* Use appropriate equipment such as ladders and scaffolds, washes light fixtures, replaces light bulbs, dusts and/or washes light fixtures and high places such as ceilings.

* Use designated equipment to polish wood and metal fixtures and equipment.

* Use manual and/or mechanical equipment to occasionally remove snow; may clean sidewalks, yards, and drives; mow lawns in assigned areas.

* Setup equipment in assigned areas, such as athletic fields, gymnasiums, and conference and meeting rooms as needed.

* May work in laboratories or clean room areas where a high degree of cleanliness is required to minimize the possible spread of infection.

* Strip the wax from furniture; clean and polish furniture.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Reports directly to a supervising janitor and takes daily direction from a janitor or lead cleaner in an assigned building.

Required Qualifications

There are no education or experience requirements. Applicants must be able to routinely perform moderate to heavy physical labor and lift up to 40 lbs., read and interpret product labels and simple instruction, routinely climb stairs and possess the ability to kneel, bend, stoop, reach, climb ladders, and work from heights.

Laborer positions on the Moving Crew and in the Grounds department require a valid driver's license.

This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous cleaning and/or labor type work experience preferred.
