The Clinical Lab Section leader is a Medical Technologist who will be responsible for carrying a workload commensurate of the other staff level Med Techs.

Performs chemical, bacteriological, serological and microscopic procedures for which competency has been verified. Maintains in a timely manner, records of procedure performance, patient results, and quality control. Follows defined protocol for investigating out-of-control runs and implements necessary remedial action. Reviews relevant laboratory reports for extraordinary results and clerical errors before they are reported to the patient's medical record. Maintains equipment in accordance with defined policies and protocols and logs preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment. Participates in development of new procedures and policies. When indicated is expected to implement changes to existing procedures and provide educational updates to staff.

Continuously helps to monitor job performance of peers or other employees to include participation and performing annual evaluation and recommendations of rewarding/assigning within scope of position responsibility. Performs secretarial, phlebotomy and specimen reception duties.

Monitors and supervises staff; evaluates performance; and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions such as hiring, promoting, and disciplining staff. Encourages professional development of staff through coaching, in-service education, and outside conferences. Effectively resolves problems and conflict among staff. Effectively communicates organizational concerns to the staff. Ensures staff schedules consistent with departmental policy and effective service to patients, medical staff, and other departments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist B.S. (ASCP), or

Medical Technologist (AMT/ASCP) with B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics and has

Passed Board of Registry examination, minimum of 3 years experience in the clinical Laboratory, and experience and knowledge in supervision of employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Sufficient sight (includes color discrimination), manual dexterity and mobility to function efficiently in exercising job responsibilities.

2. Stands or sits for long periods and walks short distances for most of work shifts.

3. Uses tools and electrical devices to repair instruments and check equipment.

4. Able to lift 25 lbs. as required to stock reagents and various lab supplies.

5. Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written).

6. Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during stressful situations.

7. Works scheduled hours that include weekends, holidays, and nights as necessary.
