ResponsibilitiesClinical Laboratory Technician:A professional who, under the direction of the Section Supervisor performs technical work which requires vast exercise of independent judgment and responsibility involving performance of wide variety of routine tests and specialized chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests on a professional level to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.Clinical Laboratory Technologist:A professional who, under the direction of the section supervisor, performs highly technical work with requires exercise of independent judgment and responsibility involving performance of wide variety of routine tests and specialized chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic test on a professional level to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Recognizes problems and/or the potential for problems within the assigned section regarding instruments, computers and inventory. The range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits. When determining a team member's compensation and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity)QualificationsClinical Laboratory TechnicianMinimum Education: Associate Degree from an approved laboratory technology program. Or Education acceptable by NYS for a Clinical Laboratory Technician License.Exception: for those grandfathered before 2013 by NYS Education Department, applicants for Clinical Lab Technology could meet various special provisions including a combination of experience and education. This exception applies for current GH employees hired before this provision expired in 2013. Minimum Experience: Clinical laboratory experience preferred.Required Certification/Registration: NYS Technician license or eligible required. If not licensed, NYS Permit required within two months of hire, NYS Technician license required within one year of Permit issuance. Trainee's without a Permit may observe, read procedures and learn processes in each section of the laboratory. They may not under any circumstances verify any testing on patients. They may be used for specimen processing, send outs and phlebotomy. Once a Permit has been obtained, candidate may verify tests in areas that competency has been completed.Working Conditions:
- Environmental Demands and Exposure to Hazards: Works in a clean, well- lighted, heated or ventilated facility. No routine exposure to hazards.
- Physical Demands: Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks. Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity to operate computer and office equipment. Can withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships, to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new information, and prioritize tasks. Possesses critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility. Ability to multi-task. Required detailed attention to work in an environment where interruptions cannot be controlled. Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs and expectations. May be subject to irregular hours including evenings or potentially weekends to participate in operational and community events as necessary.
Clinical Laboratory TechnologistEducation:BS Degree in Medical Technology or related science. NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.Education acceptable by NYSED for a Clinical Laboratory Technologist license. Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word is required. Walking, sitting and standing, most of the day. Visual acuity and color discrimination is required. Ability to communicate effectively and to comprehend conversation. Must have manual dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination to handle and manipulate instruments, slides, test tubes and other laboratory equipment Capable of working long hours at varied times during the day or night. Alertness required during all phasesWorking Environment:Will have frequent exposure to blood, body substances, infectious materials, chemical hazards, vibration, radiation, slippery surfaces, or noise that may result from performance of duties.Employees Supervised: MLT and phlebotomistDegree of Supervision Required:Minimal.
